Makerere University to host African Literature Conference in 2012

The Department of Literature, Makerere University, will between July 12-14, 2012 commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the June 1962 ‘Conference of African Writing of English Expression’ with an African Literature Conference.

The 2012 Conference will serve as a platform for reflection, stocktaking, and charting new paths for the field of African Literature.

Whereas the key purpose of the July 2012 Conference will be to commemorate the 1962 Conference, the Department of Literature and the organizers are keen to provide platform at which different concerns pertinent to African Literature in the 21st century will be discussed.

The organizers plan to make the July 2012 Conference an occasion for reflection on the abiding and on emerging issues, debates and voices of writers, critics and promoters of African Literature since the 1962 Conference.

The Conference will also be a moment for reflection on the issues now pertinent in the apprehension of African literature and the African humanities, particularly half a century after the initial momentum of the nationalist phase of African independence.
