CHUSS to receive Carnegie Assistance

At its meeting held on 12th September, 2013, the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Corporation of New York appropriated $2,563,700 for a grant to Makerere University. The grant is aimed at increasing research capacity in the Humanities and Social Sciences, supporting beneficiaries of Phase 1 NGAA complete their PhDs and to increase retention of the next generation of academics.

Part of the grant will support the training of 20 PhD students in the interdisciplinary Social Studies programme at MISR. It will also fully support the training of four PhD students in good governance, human rights and development. Other areas to be supported include book publishing and skills enhancement workshops in research methods, academic writing and communication.

At a meeting with the Deputy Principal, Prof. Abasi Kiyimba, and the Head, Department of Literature held on Friday, 8th November, 2013, the Director Higher Education and Libraries in Africa Programme – Carnegie Corporation of New York, Mr Tade Aina, emphasized the need for transparency in the selection criteria of the beneficiaries. He also said that the Corporation had opened a new chapter in its assistance to the Humanities and Social Sciences, and promised that this would continue for as long as each party fulfills its part of the bargain.

The Deputy Principal thanked Carnegie Corporation of New York for the assistance to the Humanities and Social Sciences, and promised that they are committed to making the best of it.
