The University of Agder in Norway is seeking collaboration with the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at Makerere University.
This morning a team of nine faculty from the University of Agder led by the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr Anne Halvorsen paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor to present their interests and further discuss modalities for collaboration. Other members of the team included Dr Mette Kvammen, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Social Work Practice; Dr Eirik Rustad, Study Programme Consultant; Dr Jorunn Gjedrem, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Bachelor Programme in Social Work; and Dr Ann Christin Nilsen, Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Bachelor Programme in Sociology. The Department of Social Work and Social Administration was represented by Dr Denis Muhangi and Dr Badru Bukenya. They were received by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr Ernest Okello Ogwang.
The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Agder wishes to collaborate with the Department of Social Work and Social Administration in the areas of student and staff mobility, internship placement for social work and child welfare students as well as joint research and publication. Their priority area of collaboration will be child protection.
In his remarks, Dr Okello Ogwang welcomed the initiative noting that it falls within the broader framework of the vision and mission of Makerere University. He however advised the team to put in place a framework for collaboration. “A Memorandum of Understanding will make things a lot easier. It is also important that you think through factors that may affect the collaboration including the timeframe and cost implications,” he said. Dr Okello Ogwang also advised the team to explore opportunities of working with other units of the University.
The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Agder is already collaborating with the School of Open, Distance and Life Long Learning at Makerere University.
