Master of Arts in Philosophy

1.1  Programme Overview

There is increasing need to understand the current challenges that affect our society today. The questions of who human being are, questions of knowledge acquisition, human values and beliefs, politics etc are getting complicated each day and therefore, a great need of humans with philosophical skills to address these advancing challenges.

The current generation urgently requires critical skills to adapt to the world today. The program will therefore, educate and train those enrolled in to develop analytical and critical analysis so as to deal with the current practical challenges.

1.2 Programme Objectives

   The programme is designed with the following objectives:

  1. To facilitate learners, to develop analytical and research skills. Learners are encouraged to evaluate existing research and theories, challenge assumptions, and contribute to the academic discourse with their own ideas.
  2. To pursue careers in areas that require skills in argumentation, analysis and research.
  3. To develop in-depth knowledge: MPHL programs allow students to deepen their knowledge in a particular area of study. They engage in a thorough examination of existing literature and gain expertise in a specific field or subfield of philosophy.
  4. To build philosophical capacity for theoretical and practical engagement that will transform society’s mind set.
  5. Contribution to Knowledge: An MPHL thesis often requires students to make an original contribution to the field. This can involve conducting new research, offering a novel interpretation of existing data, or advancing theoretical frameworks. Whereas this objective could be general to all MA courses, it still remains relevant to be mentioned.

1.3 Programme Outcomes

By the end of the programme, students should be able to:

  1. Discuss main trends of Philosophy from within and without Africa
  2. Critique Philosophical theories and methods and so form ideas that steer development
  • Contribute to positive transformation of society policies in regard to policy and administration.
  1. Write a clear, critical and rigorous dissertation and be experts in a particular field of Philosophy so as to continue the propagation of knowledge to the future generations.

1.4 Employment Prospects.

The graduates of this programme can effectively be employed in the following institutions:

  • Government ministries, departments and agencies like (The Directorate for Ethics and Integrity; Inspectorate of Government; ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development; Ministry of Internal Affairs; Ministry of Foreign Affairs)
  • Humanitarian service (Handling refugees, displaced persons, etc)
  • International Bodies (such as UN, Red Cross, UNESCO, UNHCR, etc)
  • District community development offices
  • Uganda prisons service
  • Uganda Police Force
  • Uganda People’s Defence forces
  • Civil society work and Religious organisations
  • Charity organisations
  • Higher academic institutions as lecturers and Tutors
  • Join the world of politics

2.1 Nature of the Program

This will be a full time – Day programme.

2.2 Target Group

The MPHL Programme is open to candidates in possession of at least a minimum second lower-class Honours BA. Philosophy degree or its equivalent from a recognized university or institution.

2.3 Duration

The duration of the MPHL degree is two years each of two semesters. Each semester shall comprise 17 weeks of teaching/study and 2 weeks of examinations. There shall be a break of 4 weeks between semesters.

2.4 Designation of the Award

 Successful candidates will be awarded a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy  of    Makerere University.

2.5 Tuition fees (International and East Africans)

Tuition:  East Africans generally will pay 5,650,000/= (Five Million, six Hundred fifty thousand only) Ugandan shillings per annum, while the international students will pay7,000,000/= (Seven million only per annum) Ugandan shillings.

3. Admission Requirements

The MPHL Programme is open to candidates in possession of at least a lower second-class Honours BA. Philosophy degree or its equivalent from a recognized university or institution.
