Paul Omach is an accomplished scholar and academic leader, currently serving as Head of the Department of Political Science & Public Administration at Makerere University’s School of Social Sciences

Biography

Assoc. Prof. Paul Omach, He holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, with a distinguished research focus on governance, conflict, security, and peacebuilding in Eastern Africa and the Great Lakes region.

A prolific academic, Dr. Omach has authored and co-authored influential publications, including studies on vigilante groups and militia politics in Uganda , as well as analyses of social media’s role in student politics. His 2016 work on civil society involvement in peacemaking in Northern Uganda appeared in the Journal of Asian and African Studies and continues to inform scholarship and policymaking on local peacebuilding strategies.

In his administrative and mentorship roles, Associate Professor Omach has been pivotal in advancing interdisciplinary research at Makerere. He leads the Centre for United States Studies, where in April 2025 he opened a major workshop reviewing the US–Uganda relations book project—underscoring his commitment to rigorous timelines and academic excellence.

As Head of Department, Dr. Omach oversees curricular development and fosters rigorous research training in political science, public administration, and international relations. Under his leadership, the department continues to produce graduates equipped for impactful careers across public service, academia, diplomacy, and civil society
