Prof. Peter R. Atekyereza is a Professor of Sociology at Makerere University, where he contributes to teaching, research, and graduate supervision within the social sciences. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from Makerere University (1991) and later pursued advanced training at the University of Zimbabwe, where he obtained a Master of Science in Rural and Urban Planning (1993) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Rural and Urban Planning (1995). He earned his Doctorate (Dr. rer. soc. oec.) in Economic and Social Sciences from Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, in 2001. His academic training combines sociology, development studies, and planning, which has shaped his interdisciplinary approach to research and policy engagement.
Prof. Atekyereza’s scholarship focuses on social development, family and gender relations, urban livelihoods, sanitation in informal settlements, HIV/AIDS, and socio-cultural transformation in Africa. Over the years, he has contributed extensively to research on poverty, community development, and social policy in Uganda and the broader Sub-Saharan African context. At Makerere University, he has played an important role in mentoring students, supervising postgraduate research, and contributing to the advancement of sociological scholarship through publications, policy engagement, and collaborative research initiatives.
