Biography

Dr. Mbabazi Lillian is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Performing Arts and Film at Makerere University. As an accomplished arts educator, creative practitioner, and social practice artist, she specializes in Applied Theatre and Community Theatre methodologies. Her work focuses on using interactive, participant-led performance techniques to engage marginalized communities, amplify suppressed voices, and address critical social problems. Bridging the gap between academic theory and grassroots action, she teaches and mentors the next generation of creative facilitators to use storytelling as a powerful tool for social dialogue, healing, and cultural preservation.
 
Her academic and field research centers on collaborative, research-led arts to drive community development and influence social policy. Dr. Mbabazi holds a PhD in Applied Theatre from Makerere University, where she researched the social impact of storytelling traditions, an MA in Theatre and Global Development from the University of Leeds (UK), and a first-class Bachelor of Arts in Drama from Makerere University. Her specialized expertise spans gender and policymaking, sexual and reproductive health, and environmental resource governance, making her a vital voice in utilizing the transformative power of performance for global and local development.
