Namiyingo Julian

Dr. Julian Namiyingo is a Lecturer in the Department of Literature, School of Languages, Literature and Communication, College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Makerere University. She is a scholar of literature whose teaching and research interests include African literature, women’s writing, gender and power, literary theory, cultural studies and fiction.

Her doctoral research examined representations of women’s agency in selected works by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi, Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The study explores how contemporary African women writers portray women negotiating patriarchal structures and exercising social, economic and political agency. Her thesis was recognised with Makerere University’s Best PhD Thesis Award for 2026.

Dr. Namiyingo has also published research on women’s agency and political power in Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi’s novel Kintu. Her scholarship contributes to wider debates on African literature, gender relations, cultural identity and power.
