Dr. Samson Barigye is a Chevening scholar and Lecturer in Peace and Conflict Studies at Makerere University. He is also the Academic Coordinator of Makerere University Rotary Peace Centre. His main teaching and research interests, as well as community engagement activities are in the areas of conflict resolution and transformation; international humanitarian law; forced migration with a focus on refugees, internal displacement and disasters; post-conflict peace-building, post-war recovery, reconstruction, reconciliation and social cohesion; dialogue, mediation and negotiation; humanitarian intervention and humanitarian assistance; disarmament, demobilization, reintegration and rehabilitation (DDRR) of ex-combatants; and the humanitarian-development-peace (HDP) nexus. He is an experienced conflict analyst, conflict prevention and mitigation expert with solid competence in conflict sensitivity and the do-no-harm approach to programming.
Dr. Barigye is a practitioner academic, working both as an active researcher and teacher at Makerere University, and as an active practitioner in the field of peacebuilding and conflict resolution. These dual roles enable him to bring real-world issues into the classroom, and to bridge the gap between abstract academic theory and real-world application. As a practitioner with experience spanning three decades, he has worked at the local/grassroots level, as well as at national, regional and international level. During this period, he has held technical and managerial positions with INGOs, donor/development agencies, the UN and Government. He has worked extensively both in active conflict areas, as well as other humanitarian and development settings. He has provided expert and technical advice to embassies, donor/development agencies, CSOs/NGOs, UN agencies, government agencies, regional organizations and international agencies on issues where he has expertise.
Dr. Barigye holds a PhD in Conflict and Social Development from the University of Cape Town (South Africa); an M.A in Post-War Recovery and Reconstruction Studies from the University of York (UK); an M.A in Peace and Conflict Studies from Makerere University; a PGD in Project Planning and Management from the Uganda Management Institute; and a B.A in Social Sciences from Makerere University.
