CHUSS Hosts Bethwell A. Ogot Memorial Lecture, Emphasizes Culture as Identity and Resilience

Makerere University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS), through its Department of History, Archaeology and Heritage Studies, held the Bethwell A. Ogot Memorial Lecture on August 15, 2025, focusing on the enduring relevance of culture in African societies.

Delivering the keynote titled “The Limitations of Culture”, renowned historian Prof. Toyin Falola emphasized culture as a vital store of history, identity, and community—honoring the scholarly legacy of the late Prof. Ogot. Falola highlighted culture’s role in shaping worldviews, fostering resilience, and sustaining African societies through colonialism and beyond.
