SUMMARY:Orientation Week for 2026/2027 academic year
DESCRIPTION:The College of Humanities and Social Sciences welcomes all freshers admitted to Makerere University for the 2026/2027 Academic Year. Orientation Week will run from Saturday\, 1st August 2026 to Friday\, 7th August 2026\, providing new students with an opportunity to settle into university life\, understand academic expectations\, and become familiar with the services and structures that support student success. \nAs part of the Orientation Week programme\, the Central Orientation Programme will be held on Monday\, 3rd August 2026\, at Freedom Square\, starting at 9:00 a.m. This session will introduce freshers to key university policies\, procedures\, and services\, while also offering guidance on how to navigate academic and social life at Makerere University. \nCollege and School orientation activities will take place from Tuesday\, 4th August 2026 to Friday\, 7th August 2026. During these sessions\, CHUSS freshers will be introduced to their respective schools\, departments\, academic programmes\, student support systems\, and college leadership. Lectures will officially begin on Monday\, 10th August 2026\, and all students are reminded to complete registration within the first two weeks of the semester.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture Commemorating the 250th Anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America
DESCRIPTION:The Great Lakes Center for the Study of the United States\, established within the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Makerere University\, was officially launched on 25 March 2025 by H.E. William Popp\, United States Ambassador to Uganda. Supported by the U.S. Mission in Kampala\, the Centre promotes research\, knowledge exchange\, and academic partnerships between the United States and the Great Lakes region\, with a particular focus on governance\, democracy\, science\, technology and sustainable development. \nThe Centre is currently undertaking a pioneering research project on Uganda–United States relations since 1945 under the framework of Civilizational Relationality. This work will culminate in a scholarly publication that positions Makerere University as a regional leader in U.S.–Africa studies. \nAs part of its public engagement activities and in collaboration with the United States Embassy in Kampala\, the Centre will host a Public Lecture to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America’s Independence on Wednesday\, 19 August 2026\, at 2:00 p.m. in the Makerere University Main Hall. \nThe lecture will feature Professor Gilbert Khadiagala from the University of Witwatersrand\, South Africa\, as the keynote speaker\, presenting a lecture entitled\, “The United States through 250 Years.” A panel discussion  will follow. \n On behalf of the organizing committee\, I am pleased to invite you to participate in this important event. Your presence will greatly enrich this celebration and reaffirm the University’s commitment to international academic collaboration.
