Dr. Fred Bateganya is the Head of the Department of Sociology & Social Anthropology at the School of Social Sciences, Makerere University. He is a seasoned academic with a strong background in sociology, social anthropology, and public health-related research. In his leadership role, Dr. Bateganya oversees the department’s academic programs, supervises graduate research, and contributes to curriculum development and mentorship. He teaches several undergraduate courses, including Dynamics of African Livelihoods, and actively supports postgraduate training through supervision and academic guidance.
Dr. Bateganya is also engaged in broader scholarly and community-focused initiatives. He has moderated seminars and workshops under projects like the Borderland Dynamics in East Africa, which explore informal cross-border movements and their social and economic impacts. His research supervision includes studies on public health challenges such as bilharzia among school children, reflecting his commitment to applied research that informs policy and practice. Through his teaching, research, and leadership, Dr. Bateganya continues to make significant contributions to the field of social sciences at Makerere University and beyond.
