Dr. Gerald Walulya is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Communication, Makerere University. He holds a PhD in Journalism and Communication and a Master of Philosophy in Media Studies degree from the University of Oslo, Norway and a Bachelor of Mass Communication degree from Makerere University, Uganda. Before joining the academia, he worked as a journalist at Daily Monitor newspaper in Uganda. Dr. Walulya is widely published in the area of press freedom and freedom of expression, journalism and elections. His research on safety and security of journalists has highlighted dynamics of practicing journalism in less democratic contexts. His work has been published by renowned publishers such as Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan and Emerald and journals such as Digital Journalism and Media and Communication. He has participated and presented papers in several local and international conferences. In addition to his academic role, Dr. Walulya is involved in industry-wide activities such as acting as a judge at the Uganda National Journalism Awards, training practicing journalists, and conducting research aimed at improving the journalism industry performance and competitiveness. He regularly participates in public engagements on press freedom and access to information and journalism practice. Dr. Walulya is also an active public commentator on contemporary issues in major local and international media.
