Dr. Gilbert Gumoshabe (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of African Languages at Makerere University’s School of Languages, Literature and Communication. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from Makerere University (2013), an MA in Runyakitara (1998), and a BA (Hons) in Runyakitara and Sociology (1994) from the same institution.
Dr. Gilbert Gumoshabe (PhD) is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of African Languages at Makerere University’s School of Languages, Literature and Communication. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from Makerere University (2013), an MA in Runyakitara (1998), and a BA (Hons) in Runyakitara and Sociology (1994) from the same institution. With nearly three decades of academic service, Dr. Gumoshabe has advanced to leadership roles including Director of the Confucius Institute, College Examinations and Timetable Coordinator, and previously Coordinator of Runyakitara and Social Anthropology. An accomplished researcher and translator, he has championed language policy initiatives, post-doctoral dictionary projects, curriculum reviews, and numerous translation consultancies for both national and international organizations.
Dr. Gumoshabe’s distinguished scholarly output includes co-authoring Katondoozi, a Runyankore-Rukiga thesaurus, and contributing to multiple book chapters and journals on Runyakitara and language studies. His awards include the Golden Jubilee Independence Medal (2013) for outstanding national service in local language promotion and a Scholarly Co-Authorship Award by Makerere University in 2019. Beyond academia, he has provided critical translation and editing services to agencies such as the UNHCR, World Vision, and Uganda Revenue Authority, among others. His sustained contribution to cultural preservation, education, and public service positions him among Uganda’s leading scholars and language experts.
