Biography

Dr. Charlotte Karungi Mafumbo is a distinguished Ugandan academic, researcher, and institutional leader. She earned her PhD in Political Studies from the University of Cape Town in 2008, focusing on Uganda’s interventionist foreign policy and national security challenges.

From November 2019 until early November 2022, Dr. Mafumbo served as Acting Chair of the Department of History, Archaeology and Heritage Studies at Makerere University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS), where she oversaw a period of notable growth—especially in graduate student enrollment and expanded collaborative partnerships with institutions such as JICA, European universities, and scholarship programmes including Gerda Henkel and Andrew Mellon funding.

As a scholar of history, gender studies, and peacebuilding, she has more than 20 years of experience in research and academia, bridging theory and practical engagement across conflict resolution and human rights areas. She was co-investigator on a notable Makerere Research and Innovations Fund (Mak‑RIF) project that trained urban community leaders in conflict resolution, advocacy, and dialogue during COVID-19, focusing on vulnerable populations in Kampala’s slum neighborhoods.

Dr. Mafumbo’s work exemplifies academic leadership, interdisciplinary research, and community-focused impact. Her profile reflects a commitment to advancing heritage studies, social justice, and institutional mentorship within Uganda’s higher education sector.
