Biography

Dr. Fred Kakooza is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Communication at Makerere University, where he combines teaching, research, and service in media studies, communication technology, and digital innovation.

He earned his Bachelor’s (Honours) in Mass Communication and Master’s in Journalism & Communication from Makerere University. He holds a PhD in Cultural & Media Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa. His master’s research examined the influence of commercial priorities on broadcast media content in Uganda. He is also engaged in doctoral work on the role of social media in health communication, particularly around HIV/AIDS prevention among young people in Uganda.

Dr. Kakooza’s research interests include digital media, health communication, broadcasting, and public service delivery in Uganda’s evolving media environment. He has published on topics such as social media for health messaging, news production in digital contexts, and the media’s role during the COVID-19 crisis.
