abstract = {The tangible benefits of entrepreneurial activities are realisable in the long rather than in the short term. Therefore, individuals entering self-employment should be willing to persist in their entrepreneurial activities. Based on the self-determination theory (SDT), the current study examines the role of psychological work outcomes, including satisfaction of the need for autonomy, meaning in life and intrinsic job satisfaction, on intention to stay in self-employment or salaried employment. Cross-cultural and gender differences in the effects of these work outcomes on intention to stay in one’s current form of employment are also examined. The sample comprised 240 self-employed and 338 salary-employed individuals from Uganda and Germany. The results showed that the self-employed had higher intentions than the salary-employed individuals to stay in their current form of employment. We found that the satisfaction of the need for autonomy, meaning in life and intrinsic job satisfaction were positively associated with the intention to stay in the current form of employment, but more strongly among the self-employed individuals in all three countries. Similarly, both men and women in self-employment reported higher intentions to stay in their current work (compared to the salary-employed) when intrinsic job satisfaction, satisfaction of the need for autonomy and meaning in life are high. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed.},

abstract = {Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Groups (IPT-G) is increasingly used to treat depression in resource-limited settings as an affordable alternative to expensive mental health treatments. While evidence supporting the effectiveness of IPT-G in such contexts continues to grow, a clear understanding of what makes IPT-G effective in helping people recover from depression has not been fully explored. We engaged 33 participants recruited from rural Uganda who underwent IPT-G for depression between 2022 and 2024 to identify key moments in their recovery process, signs of healing, and issues they felt did not go well during treatment. Using a semi-structured interview guide, we conducted one-on-one interviews lasting 30–45 min, which were recorded. The data were inductively coded and then analyzed thematically. Results showed that the comparison effect, thought modification, and group effect played significant roles in healing, while abandoning suicidal thoughts and improvements in sleep quality were primary signs of recovery. Additionally, ignoring age differences and breaches of confidentiality hindered the treatment process. The study offers valuable insights for mental health practitioners seeking to improve IPT-G implementation in low-resource communities.},

Given that grit and resilience are associated with persistence, this article assesses whether the combination of the two attributes predicts higher perceived behavioural control and entrepreneurial process variables among refugees in resource-constrained settlements. A moderated mediation analysis conducted using PROCESS macro showed that the effects of grit on entrepreneurial alertness, opportunity recognition, entrepreneurial intentions and implementation intention were mediated by perceived behavioural control. Significant interactive effects of grit and resilience were observed for perceived behavioural control, entrepreneurial alertness, and opportunity recognition. The study provides insights into how positive personal attributes are associated with entrepreneurial process variables in the population of refugees.},

abstract = {PurposeWith the continued influx of refugees, entrepreneurship is increasingly becoming a viable avenue for refugee socioeconomic integration. The paper examines the effects of mindfulness, refugees’ perceptions of the host community and social capital on refugees’ entrepreneurial abilities, intentions and success.Design/methodology/approachThe paper uses data from two studies conducted in refugee settlements in Uganda. Study 1 used a sample of 395 refugees, while Study 2 used a sample of 181 refugee entrepreneurs. Serial mediation analyses were conducted for both studies using the PROCESS Macro.FindingsAs hypothesized, mindfulness, perceptions of the host community and social capital were significantly correlated to refugees’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy, alertness and intentions. Mindfulness and perceptions were further correlated with perceived entrepreneurial success. The serial mediation hypothesis of the effects of mindfulness on entrepreneurial self-efficacy, alertness and intentions via refugees’ perception of the host community and social capital was supported. On the other hand, whereas refugees’ perceptions of the host community mediated the effects of mindfulness on entrepreneurial success, social capital did not.Social implicationsThe study suggests that socioeconomic integration policies, processes and interventions, especially those promoting refugee entrepreneurship, should pay close attention to the social perceptions between the refugees and the host communities.Originality/valueThe paper provides insights into how mindfulness and perceptions of the host community influence refugees’ social capital and, consequently, their entrepreneurial ability and outcomes. The study suggests that the nature and quality of the social capital of refugees in less developed countries should be given further attention.},
