Biography

Dr. Milton Wabyona is a Ugandan composer, performance artist, researcher, and educator associated with the Department of Performing Arts and Film at Makerere University. He earned his PhD in Music Education from Texas Tech University, USA, and holds a Master of Music in Composition from the University of Kansas. His undergraduate credentials include a Bachelor of Music (Honours, cum laude) and a First-Class Diploma (MDD) from Makerere University.

Dr. Wabyona’s work spans composing and performance, with a strong focus on folk and indigenous Ugandan musical traditions, and he is deeply engaged in using the arts as a tool for social justice and community empowerment. He founded Uganda Heritage Roots, a program that rehabilitates, teaches, and supports street children and other vulnerable youth through folk arts.

In the international music education community, he serves as a Commissioner on the Leadership Board of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) in the Special Music Education & Music Therapy Commission (2020-2026 term). He is also Vice President for Eastern Africa on the Pan African Society for Musical Arts Education (PASMAE) Executive Committee for 2021-2023.
