Biography

Professor Peter R. Atekyereza is a distinguished academic and Professor at Makerere University’s School of Social Sciences, where he serves in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration (and has also been associated with Sociology). He holds a Doctorate of Economic and Social Sciences (Dr. rer. soc. oec.) from Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, and has extensive training in sociology and rural development. Over his long career, Prof. Atekyereza has contributed substantively to social science scholarship with a strong focus on family dynamics, health, livelihoods, vulnerability, sanitation in urban settings, and HIV/AIDS within African contexts. His research has produced numerous publications on topics ranging from socio-cultural change and marriage processes to public health and community development, earning significant citations and recognition in academic circles.

At Makerere University, Prof. Atekyereza is highly regarded for his teaching, mentorship, and leadership in both undergraduate and graduate programmes in sociology and social administration. His work bridges rigorous academic inquiry and practical social development, engaging with interdisciplinary research that informs policy, community interventions, and scholarly debates. In addition to his university roles, he contributes to academic governance and quality assurance, including leadership positions in institutions such as Ignatius University Kabale, where he chairs the Academic and Quality Assurance Committee. Through his teaching, research, and advisory roles, Prof. Atekyereza continues to influence the next generation of social scientists and the broader field of social development in Uganda and beyond.
