Biography

Dr. Sarah Nakijoba is a distinguished academic, researcher, and Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics, English Language Studies and Communication Skills at Makerere University. She holds a PhD in General Linguistics from Stellenbosch University, where her doctoral research pioneered a relevance-theoretic approach to bilingual spoken discourse, focusing on Luganda and English. A recipient of the prestigious African Humanities Program (AHP) postdoctoral fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), Dr. Nakijoba has built a robust research portfolio that bridges socio-pragmatics, bilingualism, and documentary linguistics.
 
Her broader scholarly contributions extend into the fields of multilingual education, language policy, and local literacy development. Dr. Nakijoba actively investigates language contact phenomena and systemic literacy challenges within Ugandan primary schools, while also working to document vital ethnolinguistic traditions such as indigenous food systems. At Makerere University, she combines her advanced field research with instructional leadership, playing a key role in refining academic writing pedagogies and shaping the next generation of humanities scholars.
