William Musamba

William Musamba holds a PhD in History and is a Lecturer in the Department of History, Archaeology and Heritage Studies at Makerere University. His research focuses on the colonial history of Busoga, Eastern Uganda, of which he has published in the journals of African Identities, Social Dynamics, Global Policy and Makerere Historical Journal. One of his publications titled “Record Keeping and Political Advocacy in Late Colonial Uganda” (2024), illustrates attempts by the Abataka Abasoga to create and use archival knowledge while the British colonial government moved against the indigenous use of the archive as a tool of anti-colonial defiance in the 1940s. His most recent publication: “Epidemics and Ethnic Identity: The case of Busoga, Uganda, 1880s-1912” (December 2025) highlights how the early twentieth century epidemics outbreak in Busoga, eastern Uganda, fostered social integration among the varied ethnic identities despite decades of hostility and persistent warfare. Musamba has held a number of prestigious global Scholarly Awards including but not limited to, the Gerda Henkel Stiftung of Düsseldorf, Germany, Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC) Next Generation in Africa Fellowships, the University of Michigan African Presidential Scholarly Award (UMAPS), a Research Associateship position with the British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA), and was also a visiting Fellow at the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) at the University of Ghana, Legon in April 2026. Musamba Musamba’s research aims at developing historical knowledge that shapes interdisciplinary scholarship and policy which resonates the Uganda Vision 2040, East African Vision 2050, the African Union Agenda 2063 and The Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030.
