Projects

The College demonstrates strong research leadership through a vibrant grants portfolio, completing impactful, policy-informing projects across disciplines. It continues to attract significant national and international funding of over USD 12 million in total supporting diverse research, academic, and community initiatives. Key Grants and Projects include:

  • European Commission – Communicating Migration and Mobility: €799,974 (Makerere share: €123,459 / USD 130,620) to support e-learning programs and newsroom applications on migration and mobility in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Humanitarian Development Peace Nexus (EXPAND): NOK 1,300,000 funds research on humanitarian development and peacebuilding in the region.
  • Makerere University Press RIF Project: Funded under RIF FY2024/2025, supports revitalization of academic publishing at Makerere University Press.
  • UKRI – INIFIRES: £430,000 to address intimate partner violence among young people in Uganda in collaboration with Teesside University.
  • Enhancing Linguistic Scholarship in Eastern Africa (ELSEA): Supported under UNA-EUROPA, enhances linguistic research and academic exchange in Eastern Africa.
  • Returned Objects Research – University of Cambridge Artifacts: conducts research on 39 cultural artifacts returned to Uganda under the Museums and Monuments Act 2023.
  • Master of Humanitarian Action Program (EU Funded): €3,456,000 consortium grant integrating social work and development studies across seven universities.
  • Rotary Peace Center Renewal (2024–2027): USD 1,342,000 to strengthen peacebuilding research, training, and curriculum development.
  • Volkswagen Foundation – Summer Schools: €198,000 funds summer schools on humanities for societal transformation in Africa.
  • Endangered Language Documentation Fund – Batwa Heritage: €206,000 supports preservation of Batwa language and cultural heritage in Semuliki Forest.
  • Gerda Henkel Foundation PhD Scholarships: €375,000 provides 10 PhD scholarships in Historical Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences.
  • US Department of State – Great Lakes Centre for US Studies: USD 125,000 establishes a research center on US studies in the region.
  • MakRIF – Enhancing Linguistic Scholarship: Funded under Makerere RIF FY2024/2025, supports linguistic research and teaching.
  • MakRIF – Makerere University Press Support: Funded under Makerere RIF FY2024/2025, strengthens the university’s academic publishing capacity
  • Gender Equality Project – DGF:  promotes gender inclusivity and equality in academic and institutional settings.
  • Interdisciplinary PhD Program – Gerda Henkel Foundation: €2.4 million enhances cohort-based PhD training in Historical Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences.
  • Mastercard Foundation – In Search of Green Jobs (2023–2025): studies youth employment aspirations and challenges in collaboration with Cambridge and Restless Development.
  • Mastercard Foundation – The Imprint of Education (TIE 2019–2024): conducts longitudinal research on African alumni of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
  • Research England – HEIF: £3,000 seed grant supports adaptation of workplace-based mental health promotion programs in Uganda.
  • WUN Research Development Fund – Ethical AI Projects: Two grants of £10,000 each for debiasing AI using culturally diverse datasets.
  • Africhild Child-Focused Seed Fund: UGX 20,000,000 funds child-centered research initiatives in Uganda.
  • Summer School on Wealth and Inequality $15,000  explores wealth disparities with participants from East Africa and the Global North.
  • Terrance Higgins HIV Research Trust Fund: GBP 10,000 provides specialized HIV research training at New York University.
  • Masters & Diploma in Security Strategy: trains military officers in regional security strategy in partnership with the National Defence College, Kimaka.
  • MakRIF projects: – Mainstreaming Kiswahili: promotes Kiswahili as a tool for sustainable development; Transforming Ugandan Folktales into Digital Animations: digitally preserves Uganda’s folktales for educational and cultural use; Promoting National Symbols and Values: encourages patriotism through education on national symbols and values and Enhancing School Retention: improves school retention through community social labs and problem-based fieldwork.
  • French Embassy – PEP and CALUFU Grant: trains secondary school French teachers and integrates active learning methods.
  • RIF Project:  “Governing the Parish Development Model for Transformative Inclusivity: Lessons from Kibuku, Rubanda and Gulu Districts, Uganda.” PI:  Assoc. Prof. Julius Kiiza,Co-PI:  Dr. Charlotte Karungi Mafumbo
