While urban refugee youth face HIV vulnerabilities spanning socio-ecological levels, knowledge gaps persist in HIV prevention outcomes. We conducted a baseline analysis of a cohort enrolled in Tushirikiane-4-Uthabiti, an intervention focused on HIV testing practices among urban refugee youth aged 16–24 in Kampala, Uganda (N = 330). Using regression models, we examined the societal, community, and interpersonal factors associated with condom use self-efficacy [CUSE], consistent condom use, HIV self-testing [HIVST] kit access, and recent HIV testing. Most participants were women (53.3%), with a mean age of 21.3 years (SD = 2.9). One-fifth reported consistent condom use (19.1%), over half accessed HIVST kits (56.4%), and recent HIV testing (50.6%). Statistically significant results showed that higher education (β = 0.18, p < 0.001) and financial resilience (β = 0.18,
p
< 0.001) were positively associated with CUSE, whereas food insecurity (β = − 0.21,
p
< 0.05) was negatively associated with CUSE. Being in a casual relationship (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 3.33,
p
< 0.05) and CUSE (aOR 1.12,
p
< 0.010) were associated with increased odds of consistent condom use. Higher education (aOR 2.45,
p
< 0.001), adolescent sexual and reproductive health stigma (aOR 1.16,
p
< 0.010), and perceived HIV stigma (aOR 1.05,
p
< 0.05) were associated with increased odds of recent HIVST kit access. Financial resilience (aOR 1.05,
p
< 0.010) and young parenthood (aOR = 2.32,
p
< 0.010) were associated with increased odds of recent last year HIV testing. The findings demonstrate suboptimal HIV prevention outcomes and highlight the need for tailored multilevel interventions to improve the sexual health of urban refugee youth.

abstract = {This article synthesizes findings from a research project on the governance of national care systems for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in low-income countries. The article is based on case studies of Cambodia, Uganda and Zambia, and supplementary evidence from a scoping review of peer-reviewed literature. Evidence from these studies reveals that while the countries under study have strong policies on the books, the governance of OVC care systems—including commitment, leadership, coordination, and capacity—is a different story. Few governments prioritize the care and protection of OVC, resulting in minimal public funding, weak implementation, and heavy dependence on international and non-state actors for resources and service delivery. Adverse sociopolitical and historical circumstances underpin these governance problems, including a legacy of exploitative colonial regimes, weak states that lack service delivery capacity, and kinship care that is eroding. Improving OVC care and protection requires fostering government capacity to exercise stewardship over national systems. Above all else, improved care and protection requires that actors concerned about the well-being of OVC—including involved government agencies, legislators, civil society organizations, international agencies, and the families of affected children—form political coalitions to press states to act.},

Purpose
Servant leadership, a form of holistic leadership, has been primarily explored in Western cultures. Consequently, there is a lack of understanding on whether servant leadership style is transferable to other cultures, posing a scientific but also ethical challenge in the leadership literature. The purpose of this study is to validate a servant leadership scale (Van Dierendonck and Nuijten, 2011) in the sub-Saharan region (specifically in Uganda) in the health care context. Furthermore, with the aim of improving quality of patient care, it explores the impact servant leadership has on organizational justice and employees’ turnover intentions.
Design/methodology/approach
The cross-sectional study gathered data from 13 public Regional Referral Hospitals in Uganda. After ethical approval, self-administered surveys were distributed in the 13 survey locations. The survey used standardized scales to measure servant leadership, organizational justice and employee turnover intentions. A total of 355 respondents completed the survey.
Findings
Results of the confirmatory factor analysis supported six of the eight factors of the servant leadership scale. Furthermore, regression analysis showed a significant relation between servant leadership and organizational justice (r = 0.678; p < 0.01) and a negative relation between servant leadership and employee turnover intentions (r = −0.139; p < 0.01).
Originality/value
This study brings an important contribution to the functionality of the servant leadership scale in a non-Western context. It also provides insight into the positive impact servant leadership style can have on health workers and patient care.

While evidence supporting the effectiveness of IPT-G in such contexts continues to grow, a clear understanding of what makes IPT-G effective in helping people recover from depression has not been fully explored. We engaged 33 participants recruited from rural Uganda who underwent IPT-G for depression between 2022 and 2024 to identify key moments in their recovery process, signs of healing, and issues they felt did not go well during treatment. Using a semi-structured interview guide, we conducted one-on-one interviews lasting 30–45 min, which were recorded. The data were inductively coded and then analyzed thematically. Results showed that the comparison effect, thought modification, and group effect played significant roles in healing, while abandoning suicidal thoughts and improvements in sleep quality were primary signs of recovery. Additionally, ignoring age differences and breaches of confidentiality hindered the treatment process. The study offers valuable insights for mental health practitioners seeking to improve IPT-G implementation in low-resource communities. },

abstract = {The tangible benefits of entrepreneurial activities are realisable in the long rather than in the short term. Therefore, individuals entering self-employment should be willing to persist in their entrepreneurial activities. Based on the self-determination theory (SDT), the current study examines the role of psychological work outcomes, including satisfaction of the need for autonomy, meaning in life and intrinsic job satisfaction, on intention to stay in self-employment or salaried employment. Cross-cultural and gender differences in the effects of these work outcomes on intention to stay in one’s current form of employment are also examined. The sample comprised 240 self-employed and 338 salary-employed individuals from Uganda and Germany. The results showed that the self-employed had higher intentions than the salary-employed individuals to stay in their current form of employment. We found that the satisfaction of the need for autonomy, meaning in life and intrinsic job satisfaction were positively associated with the intention to stay in the current form of employment, but more strongly among the self-employed individuals in all three countries. Similarly, both men and women in self-employment reported higher intentions to stay in their current work (compared to the salary-employed) when intrinsic job satisfaction, satisfaction of the need for autonomy and meaning in life are high. The theoretical and practical implications are discussed. },

Introduction
Depression is the most common mental disorder in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Group interpersonal therapy (IPT-G) is a recommended first-line treatment for depression, shown to be safe and effective in clinical trials. However, less is known about its real-world retention and effectiveness when delivered at scale in SSA. We describe retention patterns and associated factors in a large IPT-G programme in Uganda and Zambia.
Methods
We analysed routine data from adults (≥18 years) who initiated community-based IPT-G in Uganda and Zambia (2020–2021). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and individuals with probable depression were offered IPT-G. We classified clients based on their attendance across eight IPT-G sessions using latent class analysis. Sociodemographic and programme-related factors associated with latent classes were examined using multinomial logistic regression. Changes in PHQ-9 scores from pretreatment to post-treatment were compared across latent classes. Statistical significance of differences was assessed using the Wald χ
2
test.
Results
Among 45 349 clients, overall average attendance was 82%. Four classes emerged from attendance patterns: high attendance (63%), moderate attendance (27%), early dropout (6%) and late dropout (4%). Relative to the high attendance class, the early drop-out class had higher odds of being age <25 (adjusted OR (aOR) 1.19, 95% CI 0.99 to 1.44), in teletherapy (aOR 3.46, 95% CI 2.89 to 4.13) and presenting with moderate than moderately severe to severe depression (aOR 1.27, 95% CI 1.17 to 1.40). The overall mean reduction in PHQ-9 scores was 13.0 (SD 4.2), but the early drop-out group showed smaller improvements (10.32, SD 8.78) compared with the high attendance group (13.3, SD 6.15, p=0.001).
Conclusion
Retention in a scaled IPT-G programme in Uganda and Zambia was high. Still, early dropout—linked to younger age, teletherapy and moderate depression—was associated with less reduction in depressive symptoms. These findings highlight areas for innovation in IPT-G implementation to improve engagement and outcomes.

Introduction
Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are a leading cause of disability and premature mortality among youth globally. A significant number of young people in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are reported to have SUDs and very few seeking help. The actual reasons for poor health-seeking behaviors and non-compliance remain largely unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the experiences of substance use, health seeking behaviors and treatment compliance among young adults diagnosed with SUDs in the Lango sub region of Uganda.
Methods
This cross-sectional-qualitative study employed a phenomenological research design. Individual face-to-face audio-recorded Semi-structured interviews were conducted and thematically analyzed.
Results
The study involved 10 participants aged between 18 and 35 years, four of whom were female. Key findings include participants’ early exposure to alcohol at home and through peer influence; involuntary health seeking behavior enforced by family and largely negative attitudes to SUD treatment under three major themes: 1) exposure to and maintenance of the use of substances; 2) circumstances of seeking treatment for SUDs; and 3) general ambivalence and negative attitudes toward treatment for SUDs.
Discussion
Limited understanding of SUDs as serious health problems amidst increasing accessibility to more psychoactive substances in the community continues to impede health-seeking behavior and compliance with treatment. Concerted efforts aimed at increasing public mental health awareness of SUDs and innovative culturally sensitive clinical interventions can help reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with substance use.

Despite the international prominence of emotionally focused couple therapy (EFCT), limited research exists on its acceptability among mental health workers, particularly those from contexts in Africa. This study explored the acceptability of EFCT among Ugandan mental health workers who completed the first‐ever 4‐day EFCT training in Uganda. We conducted semi‐structured interviews with 23 practitioners to examine (1) how practitioners found EFCT to be acceptable in their personal lives and (2) their views on the model's fit within Uganda's cultural context. Thematic analysis generated five themes that address these research questions. Overall, Ugandan practitioners found EFCT resonant and acceptable in their personal lives and particularly appreciated its focus on accessing emotions as a therapeutic tool. However, they also identified potential challenges in applying the model culturally. This research provides preliminary insights into EFCT's potential acceptability in Ugandan mental health practice and thus, contributes to global literature on EFCT and multiculturalism. },

abstract = {Abstract Although empowerment‐focused reproductive health measures have expanded in recent years, gaps exist in measuring person‐centered contraceptive desire and demand. We address this gap by examining the degree to which individuals feel that contraception is acceptable. This study explores women's and men's experiences of contraceptive acceptability and tests the applicability of the “5C” framework of vaccine hesitancy to contraceptive demand and behaviors. We conducted 60 in‐depth interviews and 12 focus group discussions with women and men in Kenya and Cameroon. A multi‐country team thematically coded and analyzed data using inductive and deductive approaches. Our findings show that three domains of the “5C” vaccine hesitancy framework were particularly salient to participants’ experiences of contraceptive acceptability. Perceptions of contraceptive safety and effectiveness (confidence), personal and others’ experiences with contraception (calculation), and contraceptive services quality (constraints) all influenced contraceptive acceptability. Additionally, three new domains emerged: family responsibility, partner engagement, and childbearing expectations. Taken together, these six domains comprise the construct of contraceptive acceptability, which influences contraceptive demand and consequent contraceptive behaviors. This work offers a conceptual underpinning to inform the development of a contraceptive acceptability measure that centers choice and agency in family planning programs and research. },

With the rising number of temporary migrant workers, there is growing scholarly interest in understanding the factors shaping labor migration intention. This study examined the role of personality characteristics in predicting labor migration intention as housemaids among prospective female migrant domestic workers from Uganda to the Middle East. Personality characteristics included the Big Five factor model, which categorizes personality into five broad dimensions; and core self-evaluation, which reflects the fundamental assessments people make of themselves. Data was obtained from female Ugandan university students (
N
= 365). According to our regression analyses, among Big Five traits, Extraversion, Conscientiousness, and (tentatively) Neuroticism positively predicted labor migration intention, whereas Openness and Agreeableness did not. Core self-evaluation negatively predicted labor migration intention and explained additional variances beyond Big Five factor traits. Furthermore, family influence moderated the link between Extraversion and labor migration intention as well as Openness and labor migration intention. These findings pave way for more empirical studies aimed at understanding the influence of psychological characteristics on temporary labor migration, especially in Global South contexts. They also contribute to literature through extending personality studies to lower-level jobs and affirming the role of family influence in labor migration decisions in collectivistic cultures like Uganda.

A moderated mediation analysis conducted using PROCESS macro showed that the effects of grit on entrepreneurial alertness, opportunity recognition, entrepreneurial intentions and implementation intention were mediated by perceived behavioural control. Significant interactive effects of grit and resilience were observed for perceived behavioural control, entrepreneurial alertness, and opportunity recognition. The study provides insights into how positive personal attributes are associated with entrepreneurial process variables in the population of refugees. },

abstract = {Background Gender is a key factor shaping societal roles and access to resources, with cultural norms often limiting women's abilities to use digital financial services. Despite the rise of digital payments, little is known about how gender relations influence their adoption and experience, especially among health workers involved in vaccination campaigns.Method Between January and September 2023, we explored how gender norms and relations influence the uptake and experiences of digital payments among health workers participating in mass polio vaccination campaigns. The qualitative study involved 23 focused group discussions (FGDs; 16 in Uganda and 7 in Malawi) and 82 in-depth interviews (IDIs; 35 in Uganda and 47 in Malawi) with healthcare workers who received digital payments for implementing polio mass vaccination campaigns. IDI participants included village health teams, midwives, nurses, health facility managers, immunisation focal persons and district health officers in Uganda, and community health workers, health facility managers and mobile money operators in Malawi. FGDs were held with midwives, nurses and village health teams in Uganda and community health workers in Malawi. Data were coded using Dedoose software and thematically analysed. Results Participants highlighted that digital payments were convenient since they were able to receive funds without travelling long distances or queuing at health facilities. Women reported that it gave them more time to engage in alternative activities, improve their financial autonomy and ability to participate in decision-making around use of household funds. Structural challenges leading to delayed disbursement of funds were reported to reinforce gender norms around financial dependency on men to meet operational campaign costs (eg, transport). Reported limited ownership of mobile money accounts, a prerequisite for digital payments, led to the exclusion of some women. Conclusion Our findings suggest that digital payments could help improve financial autonomy and participation in decision-making around use of household funds among women involved in immunisation campaigns. However, our findings show that digital payments are implemented in the context of prevailing harmful gender norms that, if not addressed, have the potential to compromise women's agency. This underscores the importance of integrating gender-transformative programming in planning for digital payments during vaccination campaigns.},

Background: HIV remains a significant global public health challenge, disproportionately affecting adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). Uganda has adopted different strategies of HIV Testing Services (HTS) to improve access and utilization, but the uptake of these services by AGYW is still low. This study explored barriers, facilitators, and preferences for HTS among AGYW in Rakai district, Central, Uganda.
Methods: This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews with 24 purposively selected AGYW aged 15–24 years who had used HTS at least once in the past year. Participants were drawn from diverse backgrounds based on age, residence (fishing or mainland communities), schooling, employment, and marital status. Data were analyzed thematically using both inductive and deductive approaches in Atlas.ti software.
Results : Key barriers to HTS uptake varied by age and residency. Adolescent girls aged 15–19 years, especially those in school, expressed strong fear of blood-based testing and discomfort with invasive procedures, while young women aged 20–24 years emphasized long waiting times, provider attitudes, and confidentiality concerns, particularly in public facilities. AGYW from fishing communities reported heightened stigma and privacy challenges in public facilities, making them more reliant on discreet mobile and outreach services. In contrast, mainland residents favored private facilities for their efficiency. Facilitators across all groups included mobile HTS and community outreaches, which improved accessibility and reduced logistical barriers to utilization. Younger adolescents preferred saliva-based, less invasive tests, while older participants favored facility-based testing for the professional support it offered. Preferences also varied across provider characteristics: married and older AGYW favored experienced adult providers, while younger participants, particularly in mainland areas, expressed comfort with male providers seen as more empathetic.
Conclusion: HTS strategies should offer a diverse range of service delivery options that reflect the varied preferences and needs of AGYW by age and residency. Expanding mobile testing, offering less invasive options, ensuring confidentiality, and improving provider interactions are critical for increasing HTS uptake in high-risk settings like Rakai.

This systematic review examines the relationship between parenting styles and academic adjustment among pre-service teachers. Impact Statement: This systematic review explores the relationship between parenting styles and academic adjustment among pre-service teachers in universities, shedding light on a critical yet underexplored area in teacher education. The findings synthesize current evidence to highlight how early parental influences shape students’ academic behaviors, resilience, and adaptability in higher education. By identifying key patterns and gaps, this study provides valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers aiming to enhance academic support strategies for future teachers. Therefore, Parenting styles influence academic adjustment among pre-service teachers in universities by shaping students' academic motivation, coping skills, and overall adjustment to university life. The review highlights research gaps and offers recommendations for improving educational support for future teachers. Methods: Using the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework, we developed MeSH terms [(“Parenting Styles” OR “Parenting Practices”) AND (“Academic Adjustment” OR “University Adjustment”) AND (“Pre-Service Teachers” OR “Student Teachers”) AND (“Universities” OR “Higher Education”)] to search ERIC, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. abstract = {Cisgender female sex workers (FSWs) in sub-Saharan Africa have a high risk of HIV acquisition, highlighting the need for innovative approaches to expand coverage of evidence-based HIV prevention methods, including oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Our study aimed to identify FSWs’ preferences for a PrEP delivery model with structured choices for delivery location, services offered, and adherence support. We conducted a discrete choice experiment (DCE) with female sex workers (FSWs) aged 18 and above at the Most At-Risk Population Initiative (MARPI) clinic in Kampala, Uganda, from October to November 2023. Participants were recruited consecutively. To identify the most preferred PrEP delivery model, we designed eight choice sets using a D-efficient design. Each set included three PrEP service options and an opt-out. Options varied by provider, delivery location, channel, and support services. Participants selected their preferred option in each set. Preferences and trade-offs were analyzed using a panel mixed model, and the highest median utility identified the top model. Overall, 203 participants completed the DCE. The median age was 24 years (interquartile range [IQR] 20–32). Most FSWs preferred receiving PrEP from a healthcare worker at the clinic with short message service (SMS) reminders for adherence support (median utility score 0.87; interquartile range [IQR] 0.82, 0.94). This preference remained consistent across all age groups, with a median utility score of 0.88 for ages 15–19, 0.87 for ages 20–24, and 0.85 for ages ≥25. FSWs preferred to receive PrEP care directly from providers at healthcare facilities and highlighted the need for additional support in the form of SMS reminders to improve adherence and prevent HIV acquisition. This preferred model, if implemented, could increase prevention coverage and inform future approaches to delivering PrEP through the Uganda National PrEP Program. },

The paper examines the effects of mindfulness, refugees’ perceptions of the host community and social capital on refugees’ entrepreneurial abilities, intentions and success. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses data from two studies conducted in refugee settlements in Uganda. Study 1 used a sample of 395 refugees, while Study 2 used a sample of 181 refugee entrepreneurs. Serial mediation analyses were conducted for both studies using the PROCESS Macro. Findings As hypothesized, mindfulness, perceptions of the host community and social capital were significantly correlated to refugees’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy, alertness and intentions. Mindfulness and perceptions were further correlated with perceived entrepreneurial success. The serial mediation hypothesis of the effects of mindfulness on entrepreneurial self-efficacy, alertness and intentions via refugees’ perception of the host community and social capital was supported. On the other hand, whereas refugees’ perceptions of the host community mediated the effects of mindfulness on entrepreneurial success, social capital did not. Social implications The study suggests that socioeconomic integration policies, processes and interventions, especially those promoting refugee entrepreneurship, should pay close attention to the social perceptions between the refugees and the host communities. Originality/value The paper provides insights into how mindfulness and perceptions of the host community influence refugees’ social capital and, consequently, their entrepreneurial ability and outcomes. The study suggests that the nature and quality of the social capital of refugees in less developed countries should be given further attention. },

The complex interplay between culture and parenting highlights the need for brief instruments that can effectively capture the richness and diversity of caregiving practices across different societies. In this study, we evaluated the factor structure and psychometric properties of a culturally adapted version of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ) for caregivers of children aged 6–17 years in a Ugandan cultural setting. The sample included 618 caregivers (61.3% women) and (38.2% men) drawn from communities in Western Ugandan households. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses resulted in a unique 13-item version of the APQ and indicated that a four-factor model provided the best fit for the adapted APQ in Uganda. This model revealed positive associations between parenting practices and children’s psychosocial functioning symptoms. While reliability estimates were modest, the adapted APQ provides a promising foundation for assessing parenting in Ugandan families. Further research is needed to further refine and validate the adapted measure for use in this, and other Ugandan contexts. Given the global significance of parenting practices, these results underscore the importance of fostering cross-cultural understanding of adapting measurement tools to ensure their applicability and validity in diverse cultural settings. },

The study tests a serial mediation model for the effects of organizational compassion on employee engagement via mental health and the three components of organizational commitment. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional sample (N = 436) completed an online questionnaire towards the end of the prolonged lockdown of schools in Uganda (2021–2022). Serial mediation analysis in PROCESS Macro was employed to test the hypotheses. Findings As hypothesized, organizational compassion was significantly related to teachers' mental health, the three components of organizational commitment, and employee engagement. A double mediation path of the effects of organizational compassion on employee engagement via mental health and affective commitment was significant. Practical implications The findings highlight how organizational compassion benefits employees’ psychological health and work attitudes and behavior. The findings draw attention to the need to design compassion practices that boost the emotional value of organizational compassion to the individual over the economic and normative value. Originality/value The study contributes to the literature on organizational compassion outcomes by focusing on employee engagement and the underlying mediating mechanisms. The study is also one of the few that has examined the effects of organizational compassion on the three components of organizational commitment. },

Objective
This study aimed to explore the challenges and opportunities in engaging health development partners in planning healthcare services at a sub-national level in Uganda.
Design
An exploratory qualitative study involving selected health development partner organisations and district local governments.
Setting
A study was conducted in Northern Uganda, specifically in 12 districts that comprise the Lango and Acholi sub-regions. The study area has many health development partners compared with the other regions in the country.
Participants
A total of 18 participants were enrolled in the study. To be considered for inclusion, a participant had to be working for a district local government in Northern Uganda and involved in planning health services or working for a development partner supporting health services in the region. Most of the participants were men aged between 41 and 50 years.
Outcome measures
Factors that affect the involvement of health development partners in planning health services at sub-national levels and opportunities that can facilitate involvement.
Results
The findings show that health development partners serve as a source of information and data, guide the planning and supervision of services, conduct community mobilisation and support infrastructure development. However, differing planning cycles, corruption, power dynamics and budget constraints affect their participation in district health planning. Continuous engagement, even outside budget periods, with respect to the terms agreed upon in the memoranda of understanding (MOU), equitable treatment of all partners and transparency from all parties emerged as opportunities to improve involvement.
Conclusion
The involvement and importance of health development partners in planning district-level health services cannot be overstated. Therefore, addressing the challenges that hinder joint planning through a focus on open communication, mutual respect and adherence to the terms of the MOU can improve working relationships.

Introduction:
Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is an important global health issue linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Adolescents in refugee settings face specific SRH needs and risks, and limited access to needed services. This research, therefore, aimed to develop an understanding of SRH needs of, and risks to, adolescent refugees, to inform adolescent sexual and reproductive health policies and programmes.
Methodology:
The study employed qualitative approaches. Seventeen in-depth interviews were conducted with adolescent refugees and nine key informant interviews with stakeholders, including representatives from NGOs, health facility workers and refugee leaders. We performed content and thematic analysis drawing on the ecological systems theory framework.
Findings:
Reproductive health issues presented by adolescent refugees included menstruation supplies, reproductive health education and contraception. Participants reported several reproductive health risk factors that include risky sexual relationships, child abuse in homes, early marriage, teenage pregnancies and forced marriage, and sexual and gender-based violence.
Conclusion:
The findings highlight significant gaps in adolescent refugees’ knowledge and access to SRH services. These gaps are shaped by cultural norms, limited service availability, and lack of targeted SRH education for young people in refugee settings.
Recommendation:
Targeted training is vital to guaranteeing efficient delivery of SRH services; with humanitarian organisations ensuring their personnel is appropriately trained to support adolescent refugees and their SRH needs. Culturally appropriate services are required to ensure greater buy-in and build trusting relationships with the population.

abstract = {Although maintaining social cohesion between refugees and host communities is a major policy goal, due to protracted refugee situations, research on potential barriers is scant, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where a majority of the world’s refugees live. This article provides insights into food insecurity as a barrier to refugee–host community social cohesion in the wake of food aid cuts to refugees globally. We conducted 24 focus group discussions, 3 in-depth interviews, and 8 key informant interviews with refugee and host community members, local leaders, and staff of entities overseeing refugee affairs in two settlements in Southwestern Uganda. We found that refugees experiencing food insecurity and limited coping resources resort to negative and socially unacceptable means, such as theft and aggression, to obtain food. This causes social tensions and social fragmentation that directly contribute to the deterioration of social cohesion by undermining trust, inhibiting cooperation, and weakening the sense of shared purpose between refugees and their host communities. Food insecurity is a significant threat to the social integration of refugees, as it weakens their social connections in the host community. Measures to address food insecurity among refugees are imperative to mitigate its potential deleterious effects on the social integration of refugees in protracted situations. },

abstract = {The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between job stress and turnover intention among in-service teachers. We specifically examined the level of job stress, teacher turnover intention, and the nexus between these variables. A quantitative research approach and a correlational research design were used to examine the relationship between these two constructs. A sample of 500 respondents was identified using stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Data collection was done by use of self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using Stata 18. The hypothesis was tested using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r). Results revealed a low level of job stress (mean = 2.86 SD =1.34) among in-service teachers with some elements of variations in responses. This implies that there could be some teachers who were experiencing job stress though the majority don’t. For turnover intention, an overall mean score of 3.10 with an SD of 1.46 obtained in this study shows a moderate level of turnover intention among teachers, representing a range of sentiments on retention and work satisfaction. There was no significant difference in the level of job stress (t=.15, p >.05) and turnover intention (t=1.41, p >.05) between teachers from Lira City and Wakiso District. Further results revealed a significant positive correlation between job stress and turnover intention (r = 0.69, p < 0.05). We concluded that job stress significantly influences turnover intention thus reducing job-related stressors could potentially suppress the development of turnover intention among in-service teachers. We, therefore, recommend the need to reduce job stress by addressing workload concerns through hiring or recruiting more teachers, reducing class sizes, creating a supportive work environment, and having regular breaks or time off to reduce burnout and stress so that employees can rejuvenate both physically and emotionally. Besides, teachers need to be empowered with stress management strategies },

abstract = {Alarmingly high numbers of Ugandan children experience or are at risk of experiencing abuse and neglect. This article analyzes the state of priority for and quality of governance of Uganda’s formal system for the care of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). The government offers little meaningful priority for the issue, as evidenced especially by low government outlays for OVC care. Low priority underpins weak capacity of the system, and heavy dependence on international agencies and non-state actors for financing and service delivery. The present state of the OVC care system cannot be understood without reference to historical and sociopolitical context, including Uganda’s troubled political history, the legacy of British colonialism, World Bank-led structural adjustment programs, and the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Nevertheless, there are strengths in the formal and informal care systems. These include a robust set of policies surrounding OVC protection, and long-standing family and kinship care practices that are the bedrock for protection of children at risk. To ensure effective care for OVC, the government and civil society institutions must build capacity to exercise stewardship over the OVC care system—both its formal and informal components. Given the government’s inadequate attention to OVC care, addressing this challenge is as much a political as it is a technical matter. Above all else, a coalition needs to coalesce to push the government to act, one that links OVC care proponents in civil society, the state, and international agencies.},

abstract = {Studies about female journalists have tended to focus on their numbers, welfare, opportunities available to them, sexual harassment, safety and portrayal. However, few studies have focused on the trauma they experience after harassment and covering distressing stories. Using in-depth interviews with female journalists who have reported being harassed on social media and in physical spaces or covering distressing stories, this chapter documents and classifies the forms of trauma affecting (female) journalists, its (potential) influence on individual journalists and respective media organisations, and how media professionals respond to trauma. Findings show that journalists experience different forms of trauma, ranging from pain, fear, anxiety, depression, anger, excessive use of alcohol, and lack of concentration. This chapter contributes to our understanding of the forms of trauma Ugandan journalist's encounter and its consequences on journalism practice in the country, and perhaps on the continent.},

For refugee children, there are a number of risk factors for poor mental health and psychosocial well-being, many of them exacerbated for those refugee children living in low-resource settings. There is some evidence that caregiver warmth, parenting self-efficacy and positive relationships between caregivers and children can act as protective factors against poor mental health outcomes for children and adolescents. This study sought to assess if caregiver-level factors (parental warmth and affection, positive child-caregiver interaction and parenting self-efficacy) are protective for symptoms of child depression. To address these questions, a quantitative survey was implemented (n = 501) in the Imvepi refugee settlement in Uganda. Results indicated bivariate associations between several caregiver-level factors and child depression. However, in multivariate models, which included measures of economic stress, both parental warmth and affection and child-caregiver interaction were no longer significantly associated with child-reported depression. Parenting self-efficacy was found to be significantly associated with lower child-reported depression. These findings indicate the need to examine and explore how or if caregiver-level factors, such as warmth and parenting self-efficacy, as well as child-caregiver relationships overall, operate in the context of chronic stress. Whereas caregiver-level factors are potentially protective against poor mental health for refugee children, contextual factors, such as poverty and livelihood opportunities, may constrain the positive impacts of parenting. },

This proof-of-concept study evaluated an optimization strategy for the Community Case Detection Tool (CCDT) aimed at improving community-level mental health detection and help-seeking among children aged 6–18 years. The optimization strategy, CCDT+, combined data-driven supervision with motivational interviewing techniques and behavioural nudges for community gatekeepers using the CCDT. This mixed-methods study was conducted from January to May 2023 in Palorinya refugee settlement in Uganda. We evaluated (1) the added value of the CCDT+ in improving the accuracy of detection and mental health service utilization compared to standard CCDT, and (2) implementation outcomes of the CCDT+. Of the 1026 children detected, 801 (78%) sought help, with 656 needing mental health care (PPV = 0.82; 95% CI: 0.79, 0.84). The CCDT+ significantly increased detection accuracy, with 2.34 times higher odds compared to standard CCDT (95% CI: 1.41, 3.83). Additionally, areas using the CCDT+ had a 2.05-fold increase in mental health service utilization (95% CI: 1.09, 3.83). The CCDT+ shows promise as an embedded quality-optimization process for the detection of mental health problems among children and enhance help-seeking, potentially leading to more efficient use of mental health care resources. },
