The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, on 15th April 2019 launched one of the latest publications by Makerere University staff titled, “Uganda: The Dynamics of Neoliberal Transformation”. This was at ceremony hosted by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in collaboration with Zed Books at the School of Women and Gender Studies, Makerere University. The book was edited by Dr Giuliano Martiniello from the American University of Beirut and Dr Jörg Wiegratz and Dr Elisa Greco from the University of Leeds, UK. It was published by Zed Publishers. The book is a product of a research collaboration between Makerere University and the University of Leeds, UK.
The book interrogates the crucial debate about the character and trajectory of change in contemporary Uganda. It confronts the often sanitized and largely depoliticized accounts of the Museveni government and its proponents. It questions mainstream narratives of a highly successful (and socially beneficial) post-1986 transformation, and
contrasts these with empirical evidence of a prolonged and multifaceted situation of crisis generated by a particular version of severe capitalist restructuring, or neoliberal reforms.
