The leadership, she added, wants to be bold but realistic, clear about what the College can deliver within its means and what needs support from elsewhere. The Deputy Principal said he was happy to be back and noted that the department does a great deal with limited numbers.

Acting Head of Department Dr. Charlotte Karungi Mafumbo, who chaired the meeting, thanked the College for research funds for clusters, exam facilitation paid on time, and a gift of a water dispenser. Describing it as a department of “happenings”, she listed a busy calendar: a JICA course on human security, an economics conference, a just-concluded conference on the history of climate and migration in Uganda, and an upcoming exhibition on Russia–Uganda relations that the University specifically wanted the department to host.

Its international profile is growing. A Cambridge donation supports eight researchers, and the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA) is funding eight graduate fellowships on Gen Z and politics, postdoctoral positions and seminars. Partnerships and exchanges involve the University of Turin, the University of Michigan, Krakow, the Czech Republic and South Korea. In archaeology, staff work with the Uganda Museum and the Dufile project, take students into the field, and have a paper on the Nyero rock art under review. Assistant lecturer Mr. Christopher Muhoozi highlighted a student-run newsletter, produced by undergraduates in collaboration with a student in the Netherlands, that keeps students informed of opportunities.

The department has 11 lecturers, seven in history and four in archaeology, with four support staff. Dr. Mafumbo said it has a realistic prospect of promoting two historians to senior lecturer and two archaeologists to lecturer by March.

Staff asked the College for support with graduate supervision (only about six of 17 historians are currently eligible to supervise) and funding for outstanding Master’s students; more archaeology staff; the museum concept and a heritage documentation project for the University’s monuments; flexible work and internet support amid rising fuel costs; a way to formalise visiting and adjunct lecturers; and more psychological support for staff and students.

The Principal said she will continue to raise PhD study waivers for staff with human resources, and that international partnerships should be routed through her office so the University’s international office engages funders early. She asked the PRO office to set up an information corner for scholarships and short jobs for students. The Deputy Principal, who has expertise in child protection, will help the College support vulnerable students and the staff who assist them.

The Principal and the Deputy pause for a group photo with the lecturers in the Department of Histor and Heritage studies

Looking ahead

The tour ended where the strategic plan begins: with staff voices on the table.
