{"id":7819,"date":"2025-09-17T07:56:48","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T04:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/?p=7819"},"modified":"2025-09-17T07:56:50","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T04:56:50","slug":"mak-don-ssebuyungo-enock-champions-foreign-languages-at-soroti-outreach-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/mak-don-ssebuyungo-enock-champions-foreign-languages-at-soroti-outreach-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"Mak Don Ssebuyungo Enock Champions Foreign Languages at Soroti Outreach Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>September 2025 | <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>SOROTI, Uganda<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Enock Ssebuyungo, Head of the Department of European and Oriental Languages at Makerere University\u2019s College of Humanities and Social Sciences has called for increased investment in foreign language education, highlighting its critical role in boosting career prospects, cultural exchange, and national development.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at the CALUFU holiday camp in Soroti, Dr. Ssebuyungo joined the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda (APFO) to engage over 100 primary and secondary school learners from North-Eastern Uganda in a dynamic community outreach program aimed at promoting the learning of French and other foreign languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis initiative demonstrates that language learning doesn\u2019t have to be confined to the classroom\u2014it can be exciting, creative, and transformative,\u201d Dr. Ssebuyungo said. \u201cForeign languages are no longer optional luxuries; they are strategic tools for communication in a globalised world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CALUFU camp, spearheaded by APFO Chair Dr. Agatha Tumwine Magezi and funded by the French Embassy, used games, music, and art to make language learning enjoyable and memorable for young participants. The camp also served as a platform to sensitize learners on the practical benefits of mastering foreign languages, especially in careers like tourism, diplomacy, and international business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government officials, representatives from the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU), school headteachers, and local security leaders attended the camp\u2019s opening ceremony. The initiative was widely praised as a model of how academic institutions can work with communities to address educational and developmental needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLearning a foreign language should not be seen as abandoning our roots,\u201d Dr. Ssebuyungo emphasized. \u201cOn the contrary, it complements our native languages and enriches our identity by preparing us to interact meaningfully with the wider world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ICU representative expressed excitement about the upcoming introduction of Ateso as a course at Makerere University and encouraged further collaboration in promoting indigenous languages on global platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizers and stakeholders hailed the CALUFU holiday camp as an innovative educational outreach model worth replicating across the country. He is also a translator and interpreter (French\/English). He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the Universit\u00e9 de Poitiers, France. His research interests include Foreign Language Learning and Translation Studies. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the Universit\u00e9 de Poitiers, France. As Coordinator of the Makerere University Centre for Language and Communication Services from 2011 to 2018, he managed community outreach services in language learning, translation and interpreting for national and international end-users. In 2016, he was awarded a Cambridge Africa Partnership for Research Excellence (CAPREx) post-doctoral fellowship to undertake a Translator Training Project.
