{"id":7983,"date":"2025-10-13T16:53:54","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T13:53:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/?p=7983"},"modified":"2026-02-05T14:35:47","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T11:35:47","slug":"makhosts-25th-annual-media-convention-awards-outstanding-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/makhosts-25th-annual-media-convention-awards-outstanding-students\/","title":{"rendered":"MakHosts 25th Annual Media Convention, Awards Outstanding Students."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Makerere University\u2019s Department of Journalism and Communication recently held its 25th Annual Media Convention, a gathering that brought together journalists, communication experts, academics, and students to reflect on the media\u2019s role in shaping Uganda\u2019s democracy \u2014 especially as the country prepares for its next general elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s convention ran under the theme \u201cResponsible Communication and Media Reporting During Ugandan Elections,\u201d focusing on how media professionals can support democratic processes through accurate, ethical, and inclusive reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Dr.-Aisha-Nakiwala-making-her-welcoming-remarks-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7986\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Dr.-Aisha-Nakiwala-making-her-welcoming-remarks-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Dr.-Aisha-Nakiwala-making-her-welcoming-remarks-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Dr.-Aisha-Nakiwala-making-her-welcoming-remarks-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/chuss.mak.ac.ug\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Dr.-Aisha-Nakiwala-making-her-welcoming-remarks.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><strong>Dr. Aisha Nakiwala making her welcoming remarks<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp; keynote speaker Racheal Aikidi emphasized the need for journalists to stay true to the ethics of their profession despite the growing influence of technology. \u201cAlmost everyone uses AI, but as a journalist, make sure your work is guided by ethics and professionalism,\u201d she advised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aikidi\u2019s message resonated strongly with participants as discussions unfolded around key issues such as media freedom, objectivity and bias in election reporting, ethical dilemmas in political coverage, the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the safety of journalists during election periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants also tackled wider communication challenges that shape election reporting \u2014 from the rise of disinformation and propaganda to the influence of social media and digital technologies like chatbots. Outstanding journalism and communication students were recognized and awarded by Uganda\u2019s leading media organizations for their hard work and creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turi Elizabeth received the Cranimer Mugerwa Photography Award from the Daily Monitor for her outstanding photojournalism work.
