The Great Lakes Center for the Study of the United States, established within the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Makerere University, was officially launched on 25 March 2025 by H.E. William Popp, United States Ambassador to Uganda. Supported by the U.S. Mission in Kampala, the Centre promotes research, knowledge exchange, and academic partnerships between the United States and the Great Lakes region, with a particular focus on governance, democracy, science, technology and sustainable development.<\/p>\n
The Centre is currently undertaking a pioneering research project on Uganda\u2013United States relations since 1945<\/strong> under the framework of Civilizational Relationality<\/em>. This work will culminate in a scholarly publication that positions Makerere University as a regional leader in U.S.\u2013Africa studies.<\/p>\n As part of its public engagement activities and in collaboration with the United States Embassy in Kampala, the Centre will host a Public Lecture to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America’s Independence on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the Makerere University Main Hall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The lecture will feature Professor Gilbert Khadiagala<\/strong> from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, as the keynote speaker, presenting a lecture entitled, “The United States through 250 Years.”<\/strong><\/em> A panel discussion\u00a0 will follow.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em>On behalf of the organizing committee, I am pleased to invite you to participate in this important event.
