INVITATION TO “THE RUINED”, A DRAMA ON WAR AND GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

The Department of Performing Arts and Film, Makerere University in collaboration with the American Embassy in Uganda will present a drama show titled: The Ruined by Lynn Nottage on Friday November 24, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. in Makerere University Main Hall and on Sunday November 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Ndere Center. All shows are free.

Directed by Dr. Charles Mulekwa, Lecturer in the Department of Performing Arts and Film, The Ruined generally addresses two broad themes: war and gender-based violence. The Playwright presents a haunting and probing work about the resilience of the human spirit during times of war and its effects especially regarding women. Set in recent times, in a small mining town in Democratic Republic of the Congo, this powerful play follows Mama Nadi, a shrewd businesswoman in a land torn apart by civil war. But is she protecting or profiting by the women she shelters? How far will she go to survive? Can a price be placed on a human life? These are some of the questions the playwright triggers the audience to ponder on through the play.
