Mak CHUSS Seminar #10 - Envisioning the Future of Legal Orders in Sub-Saharan Africa

You are cordially invited to participate in the aforementioned online seminar scheduled to take place on Friday, 6th November 2020 at 2:00pm.

ABSTRACT: The future of legal orders in sub-Saharan Africa demands attention for two reasons. One, state laws are cultural constructions with colonial continuities. Two, the normative spaces shared by state laws and indigenous African laws are sites of resistance and adaptation. Enlightened by legal history and six years of field research, I argue that the interaction of legal orders should be perceived from the manner Africans adapt indigenous laws to legal, economic, cultural and religious changes in intersectional social fields. Accordingly, the novel theory of adaptive legal pluralism offers a platform for the integration of legal orders in Africa.
