The School of Psychology, Makerere University will hold a Psychology Week later this month to create public awareness on cancer.
Theme: “Psychology and Public Health”, with specific focus on The Role of Psychology in the Fight against Cancer in Uganda
Psychology Week Planned Activities
1. DAY ONE: One-day workshop to critically discuss a wide range of psychological issues inherent in cancer prevention and control including coping with cancer, pain and symptom management, medication compliance, neuropsychological effects of disease and therapy, siblings and family relations, bereavement and care for those in critical condition
2. DAY TWO: Psychology and Cancer Walk from the Freedom Square at Makerere University to the Uganda Cancer Institute at Mulago. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu and Dr Jackson Orem, the Director Uganda Cancer Institute are expected to be the lead walkers. The day will also be marked by a number of outreach activities in which available behavioral and psychological services will be exhibited to the general public including pre-testing and post-testing counseling, blood donation and cancer screening
3. DAY THREE: The day will be dedicated to wellness promotion. A sports gala will be held to reiterate the centrality of keeping the body and mind in shape as a key resource for prevention
4. DAY FOUR: Alumni and stakeholders engagement through dinner and dialogue on strategies to increase the public’s appreciation and access to psychological services
