Prof Annie Gagiano

Annie Gagiano is a Professor Emerita in the English Department of the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. She is the author of two books – Achebe, Head, Marechera: On Power and Change in Africa (Lynne Rienner, 2000) and Dealing with Evils: Essays on Writing from Africa (ibidem-Verlag / Columbia UP, second ed. 2014) – and of numerous articles / book chapters mainly on Anglophone (or translated) fiction from various African regions. Gagiano’s more recent research has focused on fiction implicitly analysing the postcolonial present, addressing issues of power abuse or complicity; gender; migration; war; poverty; children’s lives and personal or familial relationships as depicted within challenging political contexts – often employing comparative literary perspectives. Her work reflects on the commemorative and evaluative functions of postcolonial (mainly African) literatures.
