Prof Imani Sanga

Imani Sanga is Professor of Music in the Department of Creative Arts at the University of Dar es Salaam. He obtained his PhD in Music from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. His research and publications focus on music aesthetics, music of Tanzania, gender, and musical figures in Swahili literature. Currently, he is working on two book projects: (1) on the use of musical figures in Tanzanian Swahili literature and (2) on traveling sounds. He is a recipient of the following fellowships: African Scholars Program (2007), African Humanities Program (2009), National Humanities Center (2019-2020) and Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin – Institute for Advanced Study (2024-2025). Prof. Sanga served as Head of the Department of Creative Arts (2012 - 2015) and Deputy Principal of the College of Humanities (2015 - 2016). He is a composer and a conductor of the University of Dar es Salaam Choir. He also coordinates postgraduate studies in the Department of Creative Arts.
