We are pleased to inform you that CHUSS won a trophy for best Performance (acting and dance choreography) at the Third Hawler International Theater Festival: Erbil, Iraq. A group of nine persons represented Makerere University at the Third Hawler International Theater Festival hosted in Erbil, Northern Iraq, in October 7th – 13th 2013. The team presented a drama entitled: “Three Levels above the Earth,” written and directed by Dr. Jessica Kaahwa from the Department of Performing Arts and Film and won a trophy and its prize for Best Performance (acting and dance choreography). This drama about poverty and exploitation and dependence, caught the attention of the audience especially because it seemed to describe the plight of the third world countries so exactly. Ending on an optimistic note, the drama not only gives a glimpse of the future of the third world, but it also proposes alternative solutions.
The Festival featured over twenty performances and brought together artists from all over the world into the heart of the Northern Iraq region of Kurdistan. It was indeed a good showcase for African, European and Arab cultures. The Ugandan team comprising members from PAF, Literature and Anthropology was one of the three teams from Africa which made it to the
Festival.
