Mak CHUSS Seminar #10 - Envisioning the Future of Legal Orders in Sub-Saharan Africa

You are cordially invited to participate in the aforementioned online seminar scheduled to take place on Friday, 6th November 2020 at 2:00pm.

ABSTRACT: The future of legal orders in sub-Saharan Africa demands attention for two reasons. One, state laws are cultural constructions with colonial continuities. Two, the normative spaces shared by state laws and indigenous African laws are sites of resistance and adaptation. Enlightened by legal history and six years of field research, I argue that the interaction of legal orders should be perceived from the manner Africans adapt indigenous laws to legal, economic, cultural and religious changes in intersectional social fields. Accordingly, the novel theory of adaptive legal pluralism offers a platform for the integration of legal orders in Africa.

PRESENTER: Dr. Anthony Diala, School of Law & Director, Centre for Legal Integration in Africa, University of the Western Cape, South Africa. He holds a doctorate African Customary Law from the University of Cape Town, a Master of Laws from the University of Pretoria, and degrees from universities in Nigeria and Uganda. His work uses an innovative concept of adaptive legal pluralism to chart a theoretical path to legal integration in Africa.

SESSION CHAIR: Assoc. Prof. Ronald Kakungulu Mayambala, Chair & Head of Department, Environmental Law Centre, Makerere University School of Law, Uganda.

Announcement of the AHP Grant Application Preparation Workshop

This is to invite Humanities scholars in Uganda to participate in the African Humanities Programme (AHP) application preparation workshop for the 2020/2021 Application Year. The workshop will take place on 18th-19 November 2020.

It is over a decade since the AHP and its sponsoring organ, The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) committed to developing and promoting academic excellence in the Humanities in five Sub-Saharan African countries: Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. Mentorship of graduate students and early career scholars, as well as strengthening networks among Humanities scholars on the continent, are among the key objectives of the AHP.

It is in this regard that the School of Languages, Literature and Communication, in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS), is organizing a two day Application-preparation Workshop, from 18th -19th November 2020. This is a blended workshop. In the interest of regional collaboration and networking, some of the mentors are from the partner countries.

This workshop is free of charge and open to all participants in Ugandan universities. It particularly targets applicants for the 2020/2021 Call for the AHP Grant Application. The participants will be exposed to the AHP grant application rubrics and proposal writing. This is also to help improve the quality and quantity of AHP applications from Uganda.

***ABOUT THE CHUSS CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH, TEACHING AND LEARNING (CERTL)

Early this year, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) received a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York to establish a CHUSS Centre of Excellence in Research, Teaching and Learning (CERTL). The Centre will help to equip and revitalize faculty, graduate teaching fellows, and graduate students in the College with skills in research on teaching and learning. The Centre will among other things:

  1. Offer opportunities for faculty to retool and learn from each other about the teaching of the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences in a university. This will be through an exploration of new pedagogies that foster critical thinking and enable senior faculty to provide orientation, mentoring, and instructional support to new and upcoming faculty
  2. Provide opportunities for renewal and growth among senior faculty in research and teaching in their respective disciplines
  3. Initiate and support a culture of recognition and reward for excellence in research, learning and teaching in the University
  4. Ensure that students in the Humanities, Arts and Humanistic Social Sciences disciplines and programs are properly grounded in the debates, methodologies and writing in their respective disciplines albeit emphasizing interdisciplinarity
