Dr Aisha Nakiwala Sembatya has been appointed Acting Head, Department of Journalism and Communication. She takes on from Dr William Tayeebwa who has held the position since 2014.
Dr Nakiwala is a Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Communication, Makerere University. She holds a Ph.D in Communication (Makerere and Örebro Universities). She has also undertaken further training in media and communication with other institutions including AfriComNet and the Salzburg Academy, where she was a fellow in 2008. She has previously worked as a researcher on projects commissioned by National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), UNESCO, Sida and WHO. Dr Nakiwala has particular interest in research related to communication and social protection as well as community participation, health and social change. She is currently engaged in a Deutsche Welle funded regional research project on Media and Information Literacy among Young People in East Africa.
Speaking at the handover ceremony held on 1st October at Guest House, Makerere University, Dr Nakiwala expressed gratitude for the opportunity accorded to her to lead the department. She commended her predecessor for the numerous achievements registered under his tenure. Under Dr Tayeebwa’s leadership, nine members of staff attained PhDs, majority of whom with funding from the Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research (NORHED) project, where Dr. Tayeebwa William was the Principal Investigator. The department also won several grants and increased graduate student completion rates.
