KAMPALA - President Yoweri Museveni has held a meeting with a delegation from Makerere University and the Uganda Management Institute Inter-
Institutional Steering Committee on presidential legacy.
The delegation, led by Prof. Edward Kirumira, who is the principal of the college of humanities and social sciences at Makerere University, on Thursday discussed with the President issues hinged on the proposed creation of platforms that would be used in the provision of space and opportunity to tap into the wisdom and legacy of living African statesmen and women.
The platforms, would in addition, record the history of the eras of the pre-colonial, colonial and post-independence struggles and pave the way for deep debates, sharing and learning sessions in many areas in order to enhance numerous legacy disciplines.
This is aimed at nurturing future generations into leadership and governance roles for the development of the African continent.
According to a release from State House, the delegation in their memorandum to the President, requested him to galvanise statesmen and women, distinguished African intellectuals and scholars, among others, to speak about the power of the African continent.
President Museveni advised the delegation to name the proposed facility the ‘Julius Mwalimu Nyerere Resource Centre’ in commemoration of the role the former Tanzanian president played in the African independence liberation struggle.
He said the efforts of Nyerere went a long way in the promoting Pan-Africanism, democracy, patriotism and socio-economic transformation of the African continent.
"The centre should establish the commonalities, linkages and the rich languages of Africa, which all form a rich historical background and heritages,” he said.
The President told the delegation he prefered naming the centre after Nyerere because African leaders, himself inclusive, have come about because they have all been ardent followers of the former Tanzanian leader.
He said when operational, the centre should work for the promotion of the socio-economic and political integration of Africa, saying that suits the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) programme.
He observed that the youth on the African continent would appreciate that the future of their prosperity lies under the free-market arrangement. He, therefore, encouraged the committee to stock the centre with researched local literature.
