Makerere University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) honored its immediate past principal, Prof. Josephine Ahikire, and former deputy principal, Prof. Abasi Kiyimba, during the end-of-year gathering. The event, held for staff and management interaction, celebrated their dedicated service and acknowledged retirees who had contributed significantly to the college in 2024.
The celebration brought together academic and non-academic staff, retirees, and college management for a day of unity, entertainment, and appreciation. Attendees enjoyed cultural performances from the Department of Performing Arts and Film and were treated to a meal, walking away with Christmas gifts.
Principal Prof. Hellen Nkabala’s Welcoming Remarks
Prof. Hellen Nkabala, the current principal, expressed her gratitude to all attendees and emphasized the event’s dual purpose: fostering unity among staff and recognizing the contributions of retirees.
"We are delighted to have you here today," Prof. Nkabala said. "This occasion allows us to reconnect, celebrate our achievements, and recognize the invaluable contributions of our colleagues who retired this year."
Addressing the transition of the School of Women and Gender Studies and Development Studies to independent institutes, Prof. Nkabala congratulated them on their growth but expressed mixed emotions about their departure from CHUSS.
"We are very happy for your growth, but we are sad to see you leave the college. Remember, CHUSS is always home. If you ever need us, come back. Like a parent, we will always welcome you," she added.
Prof. Ahikire Reflects on Her CHUSS Journey
Prof. Ahikire, who served as CHUSS principal until mid-2024, expressed her deep connection to the college and gratitude for the recognition.
"CHUSS is unique; it is the salt of the university. It has life, vibrancy, and a spirit that binds us all," she said. "I may have handed over leadership, but CHUSS will always be a part of me. Once CHUSS, always CHUSS."
Prof. Ahikire emphasized the importance of gatherings like this, noting their role in fostering community and human connection amidst the demands of academia.
"We work so hard and often forget to simply be human and connect with each other. This event reminds us of the importance of laughter, unity, and togetherness," she remarked.
Prof. Ahikire also highlighted the college's collective efforts in advancing academic programs, particularly graduate studies. She praised the collegial spirit that enabled the successful execution of college-wide projects and credited both academic and administrative staff for their roles in maintaining CHUSS's vibrancy.
"We are on track to topping the university’s list of graduate programs, thanks to the hard work and dedication of everyone here," she stated.
The event underscored CHUSS's commitment to unity and recognition, as participants engaged in games and interactions designed to foster connections. The occasion concluded with heartfelt expressions of gratitude and a promise to continue traditions that bring the CHUSS community together.
Prof. Nkabala closed the event with a hopeful message: "Let’s carry this spirit of unity into the new year, ensuring CHUSS continues to shine as the heart and soul of Makerere University."
