Where Media Leadership Begins

Journalism and communication training at Makerere University began in 1988 with the introduction of the first degree programme of its kind in Uganda, then under the Department of Literature. It was initially taught as the Art of Communication. From an inaugural cohort of twenty students, the programme has evolved into one of Africa’s most respected centres for media scholarship and strategic communication training.

Scholarship That Shapes Public Life

At Makerere, journalism is not merely a profession … it is a public trust.

Media policy and regulation

Our faculty and graduate researchers contribute to national debates, inform policy reform, and shape industry standards. In a rapidly evolving information ecosystem, JOCOM remains committed to advancing scholarship that strengthens democratic institutions and public reasoning.
