This report provides an overview of the events that took place in CHUSS in the academic year 2022/2023. The report is structured along the thematic areas outlined in the Makerere University Strategic plan especially the core functions of teaching and learning, research and innovations, outreach and knowledge transfer and partnerships.

Under teaching and learning, CHUSS offers 15 PhDs, 26 Masters, 9 Bachelors programmes, 6 Postgraduate and one Diploma program. 650 Graduate and 2928 undergraduate students were enrolled in the academic year 2023. Of the 650 graduate enrolment, 53 were PhDS while 597 were master students. The semester schedule was implemented including freshers orientation, teaching, examinations and graduation.

The School of Psychology developed the mindset course that will be taught to all students admitted to the University on a modular basis. The school also received accreditation of three masters programmes namely: Master of Organizational Psychology, Master of Counseling Psychology, and Master of Educational Psychology. The Postgraduate Diploma in Counseling Psychology was also accredited by the National Council for Higer Education. Similary, the Bachelor of Applied Psychology was accredited and advertised. The programme has also been rolled out.

At the Mak 74th Graduation ceremony held in February, 2024, the college presented the highest number of PhDs (30 out 132), over 1300 undergraduates, 260 Masters and 45 Post Graduate Diploma candidates. CHUSS also presented the best performing undergraduate student in the humanities. Mr. Tusubira Silas Wamala graduated with a Bachelor of Chinese and Asian Studies and tied with Atukunda Kevin of the Bachelor of International Business (MUBS), with a CGPA of 4.84 out of 5.0. The students received plaques and one million shillings each from Makerere University Convocation chaired by Mr. George Turyatemba.

The college presented a total of 85 Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) generals, senior and junior staff officers who graduated with masters, bachelors and diplomas after completing studies in different disciplines related to defence, security and medical studies. This is historical in the lifetime of Makerere and the UPDF where for the first time, a huge number of officers from our affiliated institutions of the National Defence College Uganda and Senior Command and Staff College Kimaka are walked away with awards.

On human resources, the college has a total staffing of over 400 in three categories namely, academic, administrative and support with several service units including finance, registry, human resource, communication and procurement. 49 members ascended in their ranks, five resigned while five retired. Four secured internal appointments, nine appointed on regional bodies while four were internationally recognized.

The college made a footmark by delivering the first Female Muslim at the rank of Associate Professor in its 100 years of existence. Following her promotion in August 2023. Dr. Saudah Namyalo Birabwa, who is also Dean, School of Languages, Literature and Communication broke through the proverbial glass ceiling becoming the second Muslim female Assoc. Professor in Uganda. We congratulate Dr. Saudah Namyalo for the thirst for knowledge and resilience against traditional and socio-cultural barriers to Muslim women advancement in secular education.
