Mathias Akugizibwe is a dedicated sociologist and researcher with extensive experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, particularly in the intersection of health and social behavior. With a Master’s degree in Sociology from Makerere University and over 10 years of experience, Mathias has contributed to a variety of significant research projects addressing the social determinants of health in Uganda. His academic work has ranged from exploring health-seeking behaviors to evaluating public health interventions for vulnerable populations.
Currently an Assistant Lecturer at Makerere University, Mathias specializes in community health, human behavior, and the integration of health services, particularly in low-resource settings. His research interests focus on addressing the health disparities faced by vulnerable groups, such as street children, the elderly, and individuals living with chronic diseases like HIV, diabetes, and hypertension. He is passionate about using social science methods to inform health policy and improve healthcare delivery in Uganda.
Mathias has collaborated with multiple institutions, including the Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute and Kyambogo University, and has worked on numerous projects involving community health, sanitation, gender-based violence, and public health education. As a leader in the academic and community spaces, Mathias has also taken on roles such as Deputy President of the Uganda Sociological and Anthropological Association, and has contributed to the development of youth-led organizations aimed at reducing poverty and improving education in Uganda.
With a strong foundation in both academia and fieldwork, Mathias continues to strive towards bridging the gap between social science and health interventions, aiming to develop sustainable, culturally appropriate solutions for the challenges facing vulnerable communities in Uganda.
