Launch of East Africa Centre for Research and Innovation in Social Work

The Department of Social Work and Social Administration, Makerere University with support from the Austrian Partnership Programme in Higher Education and Research for Development (APPEAR)  and the Austrian Development Cooperation will launch a Centre for Research and Innovation in Social Work on 24th February, 2017. The launch will take place in the Senior Common Room, Main Building from 2:00pm-4:30pm. About the Centre

The East Africa Centre for Research and Innovation in Social Work (CRISOWO) is a joint initiative between 6 schools of social work in East Africa and Austria. Established under the auspices of the PROSOWOII project (Promotion of Professional Social Work in East Africa), CRISOWO is a centre of excellence in social work research and innovation in East Africa. The Centre provides a forum for mutual learning, innovation and knowledge sharing at local, regional and international levels; creating dynamic partnerships between educators, social work and social development practitioners, policy makers, organizations and communities to support and advance learning, applied research, innovation and solutions that transform the lives of communities through sustainable social change.

Objectives of the Centre

1.  To facilitate the advancement of social work and social development research within and across countries in East Africa and beyond

2. To build the capacity of social work and social development professionals to more effectively engage in social  policy advocacy and development at local and regional levels

3. To promote social work education and practice in the partner countries

4. Advance and share knowledge through creation of platforms for scientific publications

5. Develop, test, and disseminate innovative practice models that generate long-lasting impacts in the lives of vulnerable populations

6. Establish and strengthen national, regional and international networks and partnerships within the social work community

Uganda Knowledge Exchange Forum - Issues for Public Administration in the delivery of policy on HIV/AIDS

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Makerere University, with support from Irish Aid and the Higher Education Authority (Ireland), will host a Knowledge Exchange Forum (KEF) on issues of Policy, Communities and HIV/AIDS in Africa. The Forum will bring together researchers from four Universities:  University of Limerick, University of Dar es Salaam, University of Kwa Zulu Natal and Makerere University under their joint project titled:  “Connecting Public Policy, Communities and HIV/AIDS in Africa.” The researchers are a multidisciplinary team from the backgrounds of Political Science, Social Anthropology and Social Psychology.

The Kampala KEF will focus on the following;

1. Approaches to service delivery in the era of HIV/AIDS and implication for public policy and administration

2. Civil Society Engagement in the era of HIV/AIDS and implications for public administration

3. Stigma in the era of HIV/AIDS and its consequences for public policy

4. What is to be done?: Policy recommendations for service improvements

Apart from academics from the mentioned universities, Ugandan experts from Government and Civil Society Organisations have been invited to participate in the forum and share their experiences.

The  specific workshop objectives include: ways in which policies that address HIV/AIDS get implemented in local settings, exploring the interaction between public sector actors and the people who use the services  provided,  the partnerships and the social networks that bring together officials – health workers, bureaucrats, teachers,  community activists, advocates, volunteers and citizens. The forum will discuss the social environment that promotes prevention of HIV/AIDS in respect to the messages, treatment and support. The forum will come up with policy recommendations on how the public sector can improve policy consultations, implementation and evaluation in order to offer better services than are currently provided.

Third Department’s seminar series - “He who pays the Piper, calls the tune? Money and Transparency in the 2016 Elections”

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Makerere University together with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) is pleased to invite you to the third dialogue in the political science seminar series. The dialogue aims to bring together an invited group of approximately forty people made up of political analysts, policy makers, politicians, academics, independent researchers, and representatives of NGOs in an informal intellectual environment to discuss key issues that influence the direction and outcomes of elections at different levels.

 

The topic of discussion for the forthcoming dialogue is “He who pays the Piper, calls the tune? Money and Transparency in the 2016 Elections” on Monday, November 16th 2015 at 12:00 noon at Makerere University, Conference Hall - 4th floor, Senate Building.

 

The presenters for this dialogue are: Prof. John Jean Barya, lawyer and professor of law and the discussant for his paper is Dr. Fredrick Golooba – Mutebi an independent political analyst. The two presentations will be followed by a plenary discussion moderated by Dr. John Kiyaga-Nsubuga. Your presence and contribution to the dialogue is highly anticipated and will be greatly appreciated.

Political Science, Fredrich Ebert Stiftung Seminar Series

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Makerere University together with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) will hold the first in a series of seven seminars for 2015 tomorrow, 12th March, in Board Room 2, 7th Floor in the Senate Building. The seminars will culminate in a public capstone event in October 2015.

Each seminar aims to bring together an invited group of approximately thirty people made up of policy makers, politicians, academics, independent researchers, and representatives of NGOs in an informal intellectual environment to discuss a range of issues that have a direct impact on Ugandans and national development.

In addition to providing a setting for intellectual debate and the sharing of ideas with non-academic groups working in politics, the seminars will be an opportunity to broaden the understanding of 'real world' politics and to foster potential collaborations.

The title of the first seminar is Same same but Different: Parties, Politics and Ideology in Uganda. It will start  at 12.30pm to 3:00pm.

Police-Civil Society Dialogue: Tuesday, 9th December, 2014

John Paul II Justice and Peace Centre (JPIIJPC) in collaboration with the Department of Political Science and Public Administration and the Uganda Police Force (UPF) have organized a one-day Police-Civil Society dialogue on Tuesday, 9th December, 2014 in Senate Upper Conference Hall. The Police-Civil Society dialogue is one JPIIJPC and partners’ activities aimed at strengthening collaborative partnership between the Police and Civil Society in ensuring security, justice and peace in the country.

The dialogue will include: 50 participants, 6 panelists, and three discussants from the UPF and Civil Society. The topics to be discussed include: Citizen’s Oversight of the Police, Enforcement of Law and Order, Democratic Policing, Community Policing, Police Public Accountability and Public Responsibility in Ensuring Law and Order.

Objectives of the dialogue are: To take stock of security concerns and challenges faced by police in promoting peace; provide a forum for police officers, civil society and academicians to discuss human rights issues pertaining to law and order; and develop strategies for collaboration between police and civil society in ensuring law and order.
