Inter-University Dialogue on Sexuality Education

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS), in conjunction with Reproductive Health Uganda will hold an Inter-University Dialogue on Sexuality Education in the Makerere University Main Hall. The dialogue is expected to attract over 400-500 university students. It will be graced by Hon. Sarah Opendi Achieng, Minister of State for Primary Health Care.

Lauch of the Confucius Institute at Makerere University

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) in conjunction with the Chinese Embassy in Uganda will launch the Confucius Institute at Makerere University on Friday, 19th December, 2014 at 6:00p.m in the University Main Hall. The Vice President of Uganda, H.E. Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, will be the Guest of Honour.  

On Thursday, 18th December, 2014, a seminar will be held in Senate Upper Conference Hall to discuss the Uganda-Chinese relationship over the years.

The Institute is supported by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Uganda, Makerere University and Xiangtan University in China.

It is housed in the former Vice Chancellor’s house located at Garden Hill Road, Plot No. 149.

The Confucius Institute will offer credit courses in Chinese to Makerere University students, and short courses to staff and the general public interested in learning Chinese for all purposes. It will also be a centre for promoting cultural and business ties between the people of Uganda and China, and it will thus have a component of a vibrant cultural centre.

CHUSS & Host Institutions internship exhibition

The Management and Staff of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences are organizing a Host Institutions Internship Exhibition.The exhibition is aimed at providing an opportunity to students to interact with potential hosts as they prepare to go for internship. This we hope will be vital in setting the stage for influencing the choices and attitudes of students towards work. The exhibition will also serve as an avenue for new partnerships to be formed between Makerere University and the Work and Development world that receives our products.

The Exhibition provides a powerful opportunity for Academic staff in the various Departments of the College and other Colleges to interact with practitioners in their fields.

WORLD SOCIAL SCIENCE FORUM 2015

Durban, South Africa - Over four days policy makers and shapers comprising scientists, politicians, activists, civil society organisations, activists, labour and business leaders will gather at the Durban International Conference Centre (ICC) for the 2015 World Social Sciences Forum (WSSF), to be held from 13 – 16 September.

The forum is a flagship activity of the International Social Science Council (ISSC) and is hosted by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and the Dakar-based Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA). These host organisations have partnered with a consortium of over 13 interested parties, comprising national government departments, leading South African universities, science academies, research institutes, research foundations, local and international research councils and prominent non-governmental organisations.

The event is scheduled for 31st October, 2014 in the University Main Hall from 2:00pm-5:00pm. The Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs is expected to preside over the event. Each School will be represented by four students.

Launch of the AfriChild Centre

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is set to Launch the AfriChild Center. The Center will be launched by Hon. Mary Karoro, Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development.

About the Center

AfriChild is a partnership between CHUSS, ChildFund International, the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, UNICEF, TPO Uganda and Columbia University. Its major objective is to pursue a research agenda on children in adversity. The Centre is also aimed at building human resource capacity for research, programme and policy development, implementation and evaluation. AfriChild has an Advisory Board chaired by Prof. Kirumira in his capacity as the Principal of CHUSS.

AfriChild is a partnership between CHUSS, ChildFund International, the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, UNICEF, TPO Uganda and Columbia University. UNICEF to train CHUSS students on U-Report

UNICEF will train students from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) on U-report. U-report, a new communications technology platform launched by UNICEF's Uganda office in 2011, is targeted at adolescents and young people. It is a free SMS-based system that allows young Ugandans to speak out on what's happening in communities across the country, and work together with other community leaders for positive change.

Main Library User Education and Registration of New Students for Academic Year 2014/2015

The Ag. College Librarian, CHUSS Dr. Ruth Nalumaga would like to bring to your attention the program for the Main Library user education and registration of all fresher’s for academic year 2014/2015.

This program starts on Monday 25th August 2014 with students of Social work and Social Administration (SOC), Bachelor of Arts (ASS) and Journalism and Communication (BJC).

What is it? User Education is a process of activities involved in making the users of the library conscious about tremendous value of information in day to day life, to develop interest among the users to seek information as and when required.

Why should you attend? New library users are introduced to library facilities and services to enable them to identify, locate and use the various information resources with ease. They are also given a guided tour of the library. As an introductory session, library users are expected to come back for hands on experience and explore more.

CHUSS Fresher’s Orientation: CANCELLED

Orientation for First Year students is carried out in the first week of the semester in the Freedom Square. Its purpose is to introduce students to the University programmes and leadership. Attendance is mandatory to all Freshers. In addition, the College organises a joint orientation programme for all Freshers who are enrolled in all its Schools during orientation week. The briefing normally takes place in the Freedom Square and this year the orientation will take place this Thursday 21st - 08 - 2014 in the Freedom Square at 10:00 am.
