The Department of Performing Arts and Film, Makerere University together with the Norwegian University College of Dance, Norway invite you to the 2018 Open Day Festival this Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 10:00am-6:00p.m in the Freedom Square.

The festival will feature intercultural music, dance and drama performances by students and staff from the Norwegian University College of Dance and Makerere University Department of Performing Arts and Film. It will also feature upcoming dance troupes and companies and a presentation on the Centre for Performing Arts, the dream home for the Department of Performing Arts and Film. Other activities will include exhibitions and performances by top notch artistes in town.

Directed by PAF's own Dr. Charles Mulekwa, Ruined generally addresses two broad themes: war and gender-based violence. The Playwright presents a haunting and probing work about the resilience of the human spirit during times of war and its effects especially regarding women. Set in recent times, in a small mining town in Democratic Republic of Congo, this powerful play follows Mama Nadi, a shrewd businesswoman in a land torn apart by civil war. But is she protecting or profiting by the women she shelters? How far will she go to survive? Can a price be placed on a human life? These are some of the questions the playwright triggers the audience to ponder on through the play.

Presented during the International Gender-Based Violence week, November 24-28, 2017, Ruined enhances the national and international activism against gender-based violence and war in Uganda. As such, this show strengthens Makerere University's practical participation in important public debates on issues of human good and sparks Ugandans' consciousness regarding gender-based violence and triggers action against gender-based violence and conflict management.

The Department of Performing Arts and Film will hold a Classical Christmas Carols Concert tomorrow, November 16, 2017 starting at 3:00pm in St. Francis Chapel, Makerere University. The choir is constituted of staff and students of the Department of Performing Arts and Film. This year’s concert repertoire includes traditional Christmas Carols plus works of world famous composers such G.F. Handel, J.F Haydn, F. Mendelssohn and J. Brahms among others.

The event will be presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.

This concert is in line with the Department's outreach strategy not only to extend Makerere University’s influence as a Center of Excellence in performing arts, but also in hope of attracting potential students to the University.

The Chaplain of St. Francis Chapel will give a sermon to the congregation during the ceremony.
